ARLINGON, Texas – Wichita State closed the Boerner Invitational with its eighth straight win, an upset of No. 23 Iowa State, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
Wichita State (10-2) recorded its first win over a ranked opponent since May 2019 when the Shockers defeated No. 25 USF at Wilkins Stadium.
Madison Perrigan's lone hit proved to be the difference. Her fifth inning triple scored two of the Shockers' three runs on the day.
Sydney McKinney was 2-for-2 and
Camryn Compton was 2-for-3 with a double in her collegiate debut.
Bailey Lange (5-0) was strong again in the circle. She went the distance, allowing just the lone run on five hits and three strikeouts.
Through four full innings, Iowa State and Wichita State combined for three hits and no runs. Neither team had a runner advance past second base, but that changed in the bottom of the fifth.
Compton's leadoff double, her first career hit, led to the first run of the game after
Jessica Garcia's pinch-hit RBI single. Three batters later, Perrigan scored two more on her triple to center. Â
Iowa State made one last comeback bid in the top of the seventh when Logan Schaben led off with a solo home run. Lange retired the next three batters in order to prevent any further Cyclone rally.
