LAWRENCE—The Wichita State track and field teams opened up a full weekend of competition with the first day of the Jayhawk Classic inside the Anschutz Pavilion on Friday afternoon.
 
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said he was pleased with how his athletes have been progressing through a season that looks different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 
"They are trying to maintain focus and working hard to continue progressing even with all the challenges that this situation presents. This is day one of a two day competition and most of our athletes will compete tomorrow. Faith Turner won the triple jump on her final attempt, which was very competitive and Sadie Boos had a very nice performance in the weight throw. Those were certainly some highlights."
 
Michael Bryan continued his hot start to 2021. Bryan placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 18.82m/61-9.
 
Bryan's toss moves him to No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference in the event. His throw also is one of the best in the country this year. The throw slots him at No. 38 in the nation in the weight throw.
 
Nate Vann made his Shocker debut Friday with a race in the 60 meters and competing in the pole vault. Vann nearly set a personal best with a time of 7.16 in the 60 meters. 
 
Vann and Eric Etie both cleared 4.30m/14-1.25 in the pole vault to tie for sixth.
 
On the women's side, Faith Turner took home the Shockers' lone individual victory. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.60m/38-0.75.
 
Sadie Boos set a season best in the women's weight throw with a toss of 16.73m/54-10.75. Her throw was more than a full meter better than her season best from the Triangular.
 
The Shockers return Saturday for the second day of the Jayhawk Classic. The Wichita State cross country team is also slated to compete at the JK Gold Classic on Saturday morning.
