WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State men's tennis coach
Danny Bryan named two new coaches, he announced Friday.
Andrea Caligiana will be brought on as a student assistant and
Alex Pozo will become a volunteer assistant.
Â
"Justin and I are very excited about adding Andrea and Alex to our coaching staff this year. Both of them love the game of tennis and are passionate about helping others reach their goals." Said head coach
Danny Bryan.
Â
Caligiana – A member of the Shocker men's tennis team from 2016 to 2019 – began his coaching career at a club in Italy before he came to the United States. The last two summers Caligiana has helped coaching Paula Ormaechea who has reached a WTA ranking of No. 59. Most recently Caligiana traveled for three weeks coaching the No. 24 ranked wheelchair division player Casey Ratzlaff over this past summer. During this three-week stint, Caligiana helped coach Ratzlaff to victory in two Futures events in Brescia, Italy and Zagreb, Croatia.
Â
"I feel this year will be great for this program. The leadership of our All-American seniors will lead all the newcomers to do great from the beginning. I am so excited to start coaching my former teammates and all the new guys. I can't wait to start!" said Caligiana.
Â
Head coach
Danny Bryan when asked about Caligiana: "Andrea was one of the hardest workers I have coached. He was also very disciplined in the way he practiced day in and day out. These skills will carry over into his coaching career and provide a huge asset to our team."
Â
Pozo – A former tennis player and graduate of UMKC – began his coaching career last year at UMKC. During his playing career, Pozo has found some great success and accomplishments such as when he went 20-7 in his sophomore campaign. He has also earned player of the week honors in both the Missouri Valley Conference (2016, 2017) and the Western Athletic Conference (2018 x3).
Â
"I'm very excited to start working with the guys. I've known most of them for quite some time having played against them while I was playing and even coaching against them last year while I was finishing my degree at UMKC. The guys had a successful year last year, I'm looking forward to helping build on that and reach new heights this year." Pozo said.
Â
Coach Bryan on Pozo: "Alex is someone we have competed against over the past three years. He was always a tough out for us. The two things that stood out to me the most were his positive energy on court and the fact that he always was improving as a player."
