True Earns All-America Honors, Johnson Completes Day One

AUSTIN, Texas – Aaron True claimed First Team All-America honors in javelin, while Ben Johnson completed day one of the men's decathlon, Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
 
Aaron True wasted no time in the men's javelin competition as he jumped out to a strong start recording a throw of 73.08m/239-9 on his first attempt. True followed his first attempt with a throw of 71.87m/235-9 before fouling his last attempt in the prelims.
 
The redshirt senior bounced back in the finals recording a mark of 70.08m/229-11 on his fifth overall attempt, before letting it fly for his farthest throw on his final attempt landing at 73.11m/239-10 earning All-America honors with a fifth place finish.
 
Having finished with first team All-America honors in 2018 (8th place) and 2019, True becomes the first male Shocker in the program's history to become a two-time first team All-American in javelin.
 
The Leroy, Kan., native was one of two American born athletes to finish in the top-5, Curtis Thompson of Florence, New Jersey finished second overall.
 
Redshirt senior Ben Johnson finished day one of the men's decathlon in 11th place with 3,931 points, 414 points behind leader Johannes Erm of University of Georgia.
 
Despite starting the day in rainy conditions, Johnson opened the decathlon clocking in a 10.99 100m and followed with a long jump mark of 6.78m/22-3. It was in the third event of the day when Johnson made a big move placing second in shot put with an official personal best mark of 14.87m/48-9.5, moving him up seven spots in the overall standings to eighth with 2,407 points.
 
Johnson jumped 1.92m/6-3.5 in high jump, before finishing day one on a high note clocking a personal best 400m time of 50.48.
 
The Tonganoxie, Kan., native will be back in action Thursday, June 6, for day two of the decathlon at 1:00 p.m.

The redshirt junior punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships on May 24, after finishing 11th in the NCAA West Regional with an American Athletic Conference and school record time of 9:53.92. Topham enters the meet seeded No. 11 and is scheduled to run heat No. 2 of the 3000m steeplechase prelims on Thursday, June 6 at 7:32 p.m. The top-5 finishers from each heat plus the next two fastest will advance to Saturday's finals at 5:54 p.m. The Griswold, Iowa, will be making her first appearance and is the first female Shocker in the program's history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 3000m steeplechase.
