Adams, Slawson Set Friends Spring Open Meet Records

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State throwers Alex Adams and Kelsey Slawson set meet records winning their respective events at the Friends Spring Open, Saturday April 6, at Adair-Austin Stadium.
 
The Wichita State track and field program entered nearly 30 athletes in the Friends Spring Open, coming away with five individual event titles and two meet records.
 
Redshirt junior Alex Adams started things off for the Shockers winning the women's hammer throw with a meet record toss of 50.26m/164-11, a record previously held by Rachael Monteil of Fort Hays State.
 
The momentum continued for the Wichita State throwers as Kelsey Slawson on the shot put with meet record toss of 15.27m/50-1.25. She bettered her previous meet record set in 2017 by almost five feet. Teammate Amanda Kakoulias finished second with a mark of 13.81m/45-3.75.
 
Adams and Slawson weren't the only throwers to come away with an event title, Kakoulias won the discus with a personal best throw landing at 43.70m/143-4.
 
Other Shockers claiming first place finishes include, Alesa Frey in women's pole vault (3.80m/12-5.50) and Mason Buckmaster in men's high jump (2.08m/6-9.75). Both athletes recorded Shocker season leading marks in their respective events.
 
Competing unattached Michael Bryan won the men's hammer throw (53.92m/176-11), while redshirt freshman Aidan Camp placed second (50.70m/166-4). Tate McDonald finished as the top collegiate finisher placing second in men's pole vault clearing 4.65m/15-3.
 
True Freshman Amiya Anoma recorded two top-3 finishes. She placed second in triple jump with a mark of 11.50m/37-8.75 and third in long jump with a personal best leap of 5.78m/18-11.75.
 
Along with Frey's title in women's pole vault, the Shockers placed other women in the top-5. Alyssa Wheeler finished third clearing 3.60m/11-9.75, while Margaux Thompson cleared 3.50m/11-5.75 to place fourth. Bryce Bearden finished fourth in men's pole vault jumping 4.50m/14-9.

True freshman Dowdy Elazarig competed unattached finishing second in men's long jump with a leap of 7.05m/23-1.75.

The Shockers had multiple athletes competing in running events. Maria Romero recorded the highest Shocker finish on the day placing fourth in women's 100m hurdles in 15.10, followed Anoma in fifth with a time of 15.12. Senior Louis Rivers ran 15.41 to finish sixth in the men's 110m hurdles.
 
Hurdler Abby Smarsh placed fifth in women's 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 1:08.17, while Jace Coppoc finished sixth in the men's open 400m dash with a Shocker season leading time of 49.00.
 
Adam Gauzy finished second in heat six and ninth overall in the men's 200m dash with a personal best and team leading time of 21.80.

On Friday night, Jessica Gardiner finished second in women's javelin with personal best throw of 40.20m/131-11.
