Shockers Start Quest for Conference Championship Sunday

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - The Wichita State women's golf team is set to play in its second American Athletic Conference Championship starting on Sunday.

The Shockers face the challenge of going up against eight top 100 ranked teams, including the reigning champion Houston (34). Taryn Torgerson made Wichita State history by winning the individual title in a playoff hole after a program record 64 in the third round. Torgerson's 211 54-hole score is tied for the lowest three-round score in program history.

Senior Laine Evans is coming off conference Player of the Week honors after coming up with a career high finish (tied for fourth) at the KC Intercollegiate this past week. Evans shot a 69 in the third round of last year's conference championship, giving her a tied for ninth finish. That third round score is tied for seventh lowest in program history.

Gavrilla Arya will make her first and last trip to the AAC Championship of her career, coming off her fourth top 20 performance of the season with a tied for 11th finish at the KC Intercollegiate. Annika Chickering looks to keep her momentum going after coming up with her best career finish in her last outing.

Her 226 54-hole score put her in a tie for 11th and gave her the first top 20 finish of the season. Chickering totaled a 246 at last year's conference championship, finishing in a tie for 47th place.

Freshman Hana Mirnik finished in a tie for 27th at the KC Intercollegiate while Chiara Arya came up with her best season finish after coming in a tie for 33rd in just her third collegiate meet. The Shockers have elected to go with the same scorecard for the second consecutive tournament.

Wichita State will once again face tough competition in conference play, who will see each team for the first time this season. Houston is the only team in The American to boast two golfers in the Golfstat top-100 rankings with freshman Hannah Screen at No.85. UCF looks for its third title in five years. will look to continue its streak of titles in odd years. Houston and UCF are the only two schools to win multiple conference titles in the championship history.

For the first time this season, Wichita State will be playing in front of a live broadcast. The American Digital Network will broadcast the conference championship through Facebook, free to fans all three rounds. Live scoring will also be available on Golfstat.

Hammock Beach Resort Golf Club is a par 72, 6,276-yard course. Chiara Arya will begin tee off for the Shockers at 9:40 a.m. CST, with the rest of the players starting eight minutes after.
