Henry, Johnson Claim K.T. Woodman Multi-Event Titles

WICHITA, Kan. – Kendra Henry overcame a near 300-point deficit to win the K.T. Woodman Classic heptathlon, while Ben Johnson won the decathlon, Thursday afternoon at Cessna Stadium.
 
Battling 40-degree weather, Kendra Henry won the javelin and 800m to move into first to claim victory in the heptathlon with 4,955 points. Teammate Sydney Wilson finished the competition in second with a personal best score of 4,869 points.
 
Henry finished day one of the heptathlon with 3,013 points, 182 points behind leader Wilson. Wilson started day two winning the long jump with a leap of 5.27m/17-3.25, increasing her lead by 286 points. Henry first closed the gap winning the javelin with a throw of 41.99m/137-9, coming within 17 points of Wilson after six events.
 
In the final event of the heptathlon, Henry jumped out to a strong start in the 800m in second place after the first lap. She continued to battle the bitter cold moving into first with about 300m left, eventually winning the race with a time of 2:28.95. She won the overall competition with 4,955 points, 86 points ahead of Wilson.
 
Ben Johnson won two of five second day events to win the K.T. Woodman Classic decathlon with 6,567 points.
 
Johnson won the first event of the day running a 15.15 110m hurdles race. After fouling on three attempts in the discus, Johnson won the pole vault equaling his personal best clearance of 4.70m/15-5. The Tonganoxie, Kan., native rounded out the day finishing sixth in the javelin (38.83m/127-4) and seventh in the 1500m (5:01.70).
 
Shocker teammate Davis Dubbert moved up two spots to finish the decathlon in third overall with a personal best score of 6,122 points. Dubbert recorded his first top-3 finish of the day in the discus, recording a throw of 36.70m/120-5. He carried his momentum into pole vault setting a personal best clearance of 4.00m/13-1.5, followed by winning the javelin with a throw of 49.33m/161-10.
 
Grant Downes finished fourth in the overall standings with 6,044 points. Downes recorded three top-5 finishes on day two, third in 110m hurdles (16.36), fourth in discus (35.60m/116-9) and fifth in javelin (40.09m/131-6).
 
Day three of the K.T. Woodman Classic continues Friday, April 12, with the start of the women's javelin and distance carnival at 6:00 p.m. Shocker Pre-State Challenge begins with field events at 9:00 a.m., followed by running events at 9:30 a.m.
 
Admission for Friday is $7 for adults, ages 3-12 is $5 and children under three are free.
