Johnson Set for National Stage

WICHITA, Kan. – American Athletic Conference heptathlon champion Ben Johnson travels to Birmingham, Ala., to compete at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
 
Johnson is making his first NCAA Championships appearance, after setting a qualifying score of 5,705 points winning the American Athletic Conference heptathlon title on Feb. 23.
 
"I've never been to a national meet before, I'm really excited," said Johnson. "I know there is going to be really good competition every single event in the heptathlon…I'm sitting ninth right now, first team All-American is top-8 and that is the goal, to end up on the podium."
 
The men's heptathlon begins Friday with the 60m dash at 12:00 p.m., followed by rolling starts in the long jump, shot put and finishing day one with the high jump. Day two of the competition is set to start with the 60m hurdles at 11:45 a.m., followed by the pole vault at 12:35 p.m., and ending with 1000m run at 4:00 p.m.
 
Live results will be streamed through FlashResults.com, as well as posted on the official @GoShockersTFXC twitter account. A video stream will be produced by ESPN and can be found on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Day one of the video stream will begin at 6:30 p.m., while day two will start at 5:00 p.m.
 
 
DAY 1
 
60m
Last time on the track Johnson equaled his personal best in the 60m dash finishing second in the American Athletic Conference heptathlon competition with a time of 7.13.  The redshirt senior will run in section two of the opening event.
 
Long Jump
Johnson will jump first in the second flight. The redshirt senior has recorded official marks of 6.76m/22-2.25 at the Hawkeye Invitational and 6.94m/22-9.25 at the Air Force Invitational and the American Athletic Conference Championships.
 
Shot Put
One of Johnson's strongest event in the multi-event competition, he enters with the fourth personal best mark of 14.35m/47-1 of the 16 athletes. He will be the second thrower in flight two, behind Kansas State's Aaron Booth.
 
High Jump
Finishing out day one, Johnson will jump seventh in the second flight. He recently equaled his personal best height at the AAC Championships finishing second clearing 1.98m/6-6. Johnson has also cleared heights of 1.97m/6-5.5 at the Air Force Invitational.
 
DAY 2
 
60m Hurdles
Opening day two with one of Johnson's strongest event in the 60m hurdles. The Tonganoxie, Kan., native will run in lane four of the fourth section. He has a personal best time of 8.10, which is the fourth fastest time entered in the competition.
 
Pole Vault
Last time out Johnson equaled his personal best at the AAC Championships, winning the event clearing 4.70m/15-5. Johnson is the fifth vaulter in flight two.
 
1000m
Johnson finishes the two-day competition with the 1000m. He set a personal best time 2:47.70 at the AAC Championships finishing sixth, the only time he has ran the 1000m during the 2019 indoor season.
