SEDONA, Ariz. - The Wichita State women's golf team is set to play in the Red Rocks Invitational this weekend, starting the first two rounds on Saturday and playing the final 18 holes on Sunday.
Head coach
Tom McCurdy is making a return to where his coaching got started. McCurdy served as the head women's golf coach at Northern Arizona from 2001-2007, becoming just one of six first-year women's head coaches to lead NAU to an NCAA regional berth in 2002. McCurdy finished his tenure at NAU with a Big Sky Conference title, nine all-Big Sky first team honors, 23 Big Sky all-academic winners, and improved the Lumberjacks' team score by 7.7 strokes.
This will be the third time the Shockers participate in the event, last making the trip to Sedona, Ariz., in 2015. Current assistant coach
Alejandra Arellano tied for 14th with Alejandra Villalobos in 2014's event while the Shockers tied for sixth as a team. Arellano carded a 148 to finish in a tie for eighth at the 2015 tournament while Wichita State finished 10th as a team.
Wichita State is coming off a sixth place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 12, with
Laine Evans claiming her third top 20 finish of the season. The Shockers have elected to go with the same scorecard lineup for the fourth straight tournament.
Evans compiled a 54-hole score of 238 to jump in a tie for 18th, coming up with a birdie to go 1-under par through the first four holes. The Wichita, Kan. native tallied five bogeys to bring her score to 5-over par heading into the final nine holes, rallying behind two birdies and seven pars on the back-nine.
Michelle Ledermann came up with her third top 30 finish of the season after shooting a birdie and five bogeys to finish tied for 27th following her best round of a 76.
Hana Mirnik came off a 243 54-hole score and tied for 34th.
Annika Chickering tied for 51st in the last outing after compiling a score of 250 while
Gavrilla Arya tied for 57th after shooting a 253.
In addition to host institution NAU, Wichita State will also see Gonzaga, Drake, Creighton, Montana, New Mexico State, Idaho State, Seattle, Stephen F. Austin, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Weber State, California Baptist, Montana State, Illinois State and SUU. The Shockers are 4-3 against the tournament field, having won the first two matchups with Illinois State and placing ahead of Creighton and NDSU earlier this season.
College of Charleston won the 2018 event with a team score of 909, with Xavier (2014) and NAU (2015) winning the event the previous two years the Shockers competed in the tournament. NAU's Sofia Anokhina became the first back-to-back individual champion of the Red Rocks Invitational, winning the title in 2018 and 2017.
Oak Creek Country Club is a par 71, 5,919-yard course. Tee-off is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available on BirdieFire.
