Wilson Leads Herm Wilson Heptathlon After Day One

WICHITA, Kan. – Sydney Wilson leads the Herm Wilson Invitational women's heptathlon after day one with 3,069 points, Thursday afternoon at Cessna Stadium.
 
Redshirt sophomore Sydney Wilson recorded three third place finishes and won the high jump to finish day one leading the Herm Wilson Invitational heptathlon with 3,069 points. The Sterling, Kan., native started the day finishing third in the 100m hurdles (14.92), followed by winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.66m/5-5.25. Wilson carried her momentum into the shot put equaling her personal best (11.42m/37-5.75) and ended the day running a personal best 200m (26.10).
 
Wilson leads a stiff competition by 84 points, Brianna Schmitz of Emporia is in second with 2,985 points.
 
Shockers Claudia Rojo and Kendra Henry each finished day one in the top-5. Rojo started the day off winning the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.63, followed by a third place finish in the high jump (1.60m/5-3) and placed second in the 200m (26.00). She finished the day in third with 2,959 points. Henry's highlight of the day came when she won the shot put with a mark of 12.27m/40-3.25, she finished the day in fourth with 2,829 points.
 
Other Shockers finishing the day in the top-10 include, Jalen Milligan (6th/2,582), Hannah Cole (7th/2,571) and Maria Romero (8th/2,557). Milligan placed second in the shot put with a mark of 11.51m/37-9.25, while Cole recorded fourth place finishes in the high jump and 200m with a personal best time of 26.64. Romero placed fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.19.
 
In the men's decathlon, Lucas Shaffer leads the Shockers finishing day one in seventh place with 3,163 points. Davis Dubbert is in 10th with 2,996 points.
 
Shaffer recorded four top-10 finishes, including a fourth place finish in the high jump (1.84m/6-0.5), sixth place finishes in the shot put (10.64m/34-11) and 400m (53.31) and a seventh place finish in the long jump with a personal best mark of 6.33m/20-9.25.
 
Dubbert highlighted his day with two top-five finishes, including a second place finish in the high jump clearing 1.93m/6-4 and a fourth place finish in the shot put with a mark of 11.08m/36-4.25. He also set personal bests in the 100m (12.50) and 400m (55.52).
 
Trey Miller of Central Missouri leads the decathlon with 3,963 points, followed by Matthew Pieper of Fort Hays State in second with 3,411 points and Tanner Raubenstine of Emporia State in third with 3,400 points.
 
Day two action of the multis continue Friday, March 22 with the start of the decathlon 110m hurdles at 12:00 p.m., followed by the heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. The open hammer throw is set to begin at 2:30, while the mini-distance carnival kicks off with the 3000m steeplechase at 7:00 p.m. A live stream will be produced by WSUtv on youtube beginning at 6:30 p.m., Friday night and 12:00 p.m., on Saturday.
