College of Charleston Ousts Shockers in Second Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Wichita State took an early lead in the second game of Saturday's Cougar Classic, but ultimately fell to College of Charleston 4-1 at Patriots Point.

Wylie Glover came up with a career-high three hits in her first time at the plate for the Shockers, managing to go a perfect 3-for-3. Caitlin Bingham tied her career high in strikeouts with six, pitching all six innings for Wichita State.

Charleston looked to gain the advantage early with a two-out double, but Bingham struck out the next batter and kept the game scoreless. Bingham followed up with another strikeout in the next inning to force the Cougars to go one-two-three.

After three scoreless innings, the Shockers jumped into the lead off the first career home run from Lauren Mills in the top of the fourth. The Cougars responded by stringing together a walk and two singles to load the bases with one out.

Charleston opened the gap thanks to Dexlie Inman, who hit a triple to give the Cougars a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth. A wild pitch allowed Inman to score and add an insurance run for the Cougars.

Glover and Asea Webber managed to get in scoring position in the top of the fifth, but the Shockers were unable to bring the runners home and the Cougars kept the three-run lead. Following two consecutive shutout innings by Charleston, the Shockers had some life in the top of the seventh.

Laurie Derrico reached first on a Charleston error, with Glover following with a single to put runners on first and second. The Shockers, however, were unable to bring the runners home after the next three batters went down in order.

Wichita State (1-3) concludes the Charleston Classic on Sunday, facing Pitt again at 10:15 a.m. CST.
