RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif.- The Wichita State men's golf team opens up its spring season at The Farms Invitational on Monday. Head coach
Grier Jones is in his final season as men's golf coach, announcing his retirement following the season on Friday.
This will be the third consecutive year that the Shockers will compete at the Farms Golf Club, looking for redemption after an 11th place finish at last season's tournament.
Senior Yannik Emmert will make his final appearance at the University of San Diego's tournament, where he set multiple records at 2017's event. The Buchholz, Germany native shot a 63 in the first round and finished the tournament with a 203, claiming his first individual tournament title. Emmert's 63 is the second-lowest 18-hole round score in program history while his 203 54-hole score is tied for ninth-lowest.
Sophomore Zac Owens looks to continue his lead in his first season, leading the team in stroke average during the fall season and coming up with an individual win at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. Senior Adrien Michellod is coming off his best fall season of his career, capping off the first four tournaments of the season with 73.36 stroke average and two top-20 finishes.
Wichita State's scorecard rounds out with freshmen Dawson Lewis and Brock Polhill. Lewis claimed a tie for 14th place in his first collegiate tournament, shooting a 69 in the first round. Polhill has seen action in three of the Shockers' first four tournaments of the season, having a stroke average of 75.5.
The scorecard of Emmert, Owens, Michellod, Lewis and Polhill marks the fourth time this season head coach Grier Jones has used this lineup combination. Emmert, Owens, Michellod and Lewis will see action in their fifth consecutive tournament.
Other teams competing with the Shockers include San Diego, California, UC Riverside, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, Idaho, Long Beach, Wichita State, Loyola Marymount, Cal Baptist, San Diego State (individuals only) and Arizona State (individuals only). Wichita State holds a 2-3 record against teams in the field.
Cal ended their fall season with a team victory at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, while New Mexico State ousted the Shockers in their final fall tournament of the season to win the Herb Wimberly Invitational, their home tournament.
The Farms stretches to 6,947 yards and is a par-72. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.
