WICHITA, Kan. – After sinking 11 three-point field goals last week,
Dexter Dennis is the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week.
Dennis – a 6-foot-5 guard from Baker, La. -- tied a Wichita State freshman record with six three-pointers in Wednesday's win at Tulsa. He hit five more on Saturday against Memphis. For the week he averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 68.8 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-16). Fueled by Dennis 6-of-9 shooting at Tulsa, WSU tied the single-game school record with 15 three-point field goals.
Dennis is the second Shocker rookie to win the freshman of the week award this month.
Jamarius Burton took home the honor on Feb. 4.
Dennis is just the fourth player in school history to hit 5+ threes in back-to-back games, joining Jason Perez (2000), Maurice Evans (1999) and Dwight Praylow (1989).
For the season he's averaging 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 42.3 percent from deep (33-of-78).
Wichita State (13-13, 6-8 American) returns to action Thursday night against UConn. The 6 p.m. CT tip airs nationally on ESPN2.
