Shockers Falter in 11 Innings, 3-2

ARLINGTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin scored a run in the 11th inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on to defeat the Wichita State University baseball team, 3-2, Friday, Feb. 22, in the UT Arlington Classic at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Wichita State (1-4) is slated to play two games in the UT Arlington Classic Saturday, Feb. 23. Game one against UT Arlington is scheduled for a noon first pitch, with game two versus Stephen F. Austin set for 3:30 p.m.

The Lumberjacks (2-3) plated what proved to be the winning run on a Shocker error with one out in the top of the 11th.

WSU had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom-half of the inning after Jake Plastiak worked a lead-off walk and Jack Sigrist drew a one-out free pass, but a strikeout and ground out kept them from scoring, sealing the victory for SFA.

Sophomore Paxton Wallace went 3-for-5 at the plate and hit his first home run of the season, and senior Luke Ritter added a 3-for-4 performance in the batter's box, leading Wichita State offensively.

Reliever Mitchell Walters (0-1) was the hard luck losing pitcher for WSU in the contest after he allowed one unearned run on no hits with one walk and strikeout in an inning of work.

Jake Georgiades went 2-for-5 with two RBI, pacing the Lumberjacks at the plate.

Stephen F. Austin reliever Cody Adams (1-0) picked up his first win of 2019 after allowing no earned runs on one hit in an inning, while Tyler Starks tossed a scoreless bottom of the 11th to secure his second save of the season.
