Shockers Prep For Regular Season Finale

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field program travels to Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday, Feb. 15 to wrap up the regular season.
 
Shockers enter a near full squad in the Arkansas Qualifier at the Randal Tyson Track Center, known as "The Home of the Fastest Indoor Track in the World." The event is $5 per person, 17 and under is free.
 
Live results will be streamed through flashresults.com, while a live stream will be produced by ESPN and can be seen on the watch espn app and the SEC Network.
 
Men's shot put kicks off the event at 2:00 p.m., followed by the women's 60m hurdles starting the running events at 4:30 p.m.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
The Wichita State women's pentathlon group is No. 5 in the nation with an average score of 3,518 points. Kendra Henry leads the group with a 2019 season best 3,594 points, which is No. 5 in The American. The men's top event squad ranking comes in at No. 8 in the long jump averaging a mark of 7.32m/24-0.25. Rayvon Allen's mark of 7.59m/24-11 leads the Shockers and ranks No. 2 in The American.
 
TOP OF THE CLASS
True freshmen Sidney Sapp and Joseph Holthusen have been season leaders in their respective events for most part of the 2019 indoor season. In her latest outing, Sapp cleared the third highest height of 1.80m/5-10.75 in Shocker history. The Oklahoma City native currently ranks No. 12 in the nation and No. 2 in The American. Holthusen has been solid in the 60m hurdles, the Bishop Carroll graduate has made a name for himself running a Shocker season best time of 8.04, which is No. 8 on the all-time top-10 list and No. 6 in The American.
 
FASTEST TRACK IN THE WORLD
Five NCAA leading times have been recorded at the Randal Tyson Track Center for the 2019 season, including two set by Grant Holloway of Florida. Holloway has the No. 1 time in the 60m (6.51) and 60m hurdles (7.43). Kiara Parker of Arkansas has the No. 1 women's 60m (7.15), Kayla White of North Carolina A&T ran the nations fastest 200m (22.82) and Chanel Brissett recorded the fastest 60m hurdles time of 7.90 last week at the Tyson Invitational.
 
GOING THE DISTANCE
The transition from the cross country course to the track has gone has smooth as possible for the distance team, including Winny Koskei. The redshirt sophomore leads The American with the fastest 5000m time (16:05.65) and the fifth fastest 3000m (9:30.46). Teammate Rebekah Topham ranks No. 2 in The American in the 3000m (9:21.75) and No. 5 in the mile (4:53.06). The distance team has accounted for 14 of the 33 Wichita State all-time top-10 marks set by the Shockers in the 2019 season.
 
1-2 PUNCH
Throwers Cory Martens and Isaiah Evans have not only led the Shockers, but they lead the American Athletic Conference 1-2 in the weight throw. Martens recorded a Shocker season leading mark of 19.76m/64-10 to win the Sunflower Triangular on Jan. 18, his mark is No. 1 in conference. A week later, Evans led the Shockers winning the Air Force Invitational with a mark of 19.49m/63-11.5, currently No. 2 in The American.
 
"It's nice to have a great group that pushes you," said Martens. "But with Isaiah, he's a competitor. He's always pushing me and I'm always pushing him, it's going back and forth. It's awesome to see the potential that we both have."
 
NEXT UP
Wichita State will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 22-23 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Shockers return six all-conference honors from the 2018 season.
