WICHITA—The Wichita State men's and women's track and field teams competed in one of the nation's most unique season-opening meets on Friday at the Heskett Center.
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Steve Rainbolt said he likes how his program's December meet is different.
"I've always considered it a glorified time trial," Rainbolt said. "But this concept of an Intrasquad Meet really makes it fun. The athletes seemed to have embraced it unbelievably. This is the 12th year we've done it in a row.
"The Intrasquad Meet is a part of our program. It's a terrific way to kick off the year and wrap up the first semester."
The Intrasquad Meet sees the roster of Shocker track and field split into three teams (Yellow, Black, White). An alumni team (Gray) also competes. The athletes chosen as captains lead the squads. The athletes themselves make decisions in line with a traditional coaching staff.
"Over the years we've seen some incredible examples of athletes who have taken it upon themselves to gather their team and strategize," Rainbolt said.
The Yellow team came away the victor for the sixth straight year. They have dominated the competition since its inception in 2007. The win marks Yellow's 10th overall victory.
The Yellow team used outstanding showings in the men's standing long jump, 60 meters, 600 meters, med ball throw triple jump, women's long jump and shot put.
All-in-all, the Yellow squad put up 169 points and won 11 events.
The White team will receive next year's first overall pick after finishing in last out of the three teams featuring current athletes.
Winny Koskei and
Rebekah Topham compete in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season opener Saturday in Boston.
The remainder of the Shockers turn to the winter break, but are back in action Jan. 17 for the Shocker Prelude.
Final Team Results
1. Yellow – 169 points
2. Black – 151 points
