TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—Winny Koskei capped off her season with a 47th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Saturday morning.
"She's not extremely excited because she didn't make it in the top 40," said Wichita State cross country coach
Kirk Hunter. "The girls she ran with at Regionals placed ahead of her. I thought she did her best to execute the plan. She had a better start this year, but didn't get in the top 30 early. It's a tough race. You have to execute it well to have success."
Koskei clocked in with a time of 20:55.1 to finish in the top 50. She made her way up from split to split, going from 74th at the 2K mark to 47th at the end of the race. She was seven spots off of an All-American finish (top 40).
Koskei made her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. At last year's race, Koskei finished 35th to become an All-American. She is one of three cross country All-Americans for Wichita State under Hunter.
The junior had a great season, winning the American Athletic Conference for the second consecutive season. She finished third at the Midwest Regional to punch a ticket to Nationals. Koskei ran what Hunter called "the best race of her career" at Pre-Nationals for a seventh-place finish.
"Winny (Koskei) had a great year," Hunter said. "(That's) two very successful years for her. She continues to learn more each year. She performed well, winning conference and qualifying for Nationals."
"That's nothing to take lightly. I'm really proud of her."
The Shockers turn their attention to the indoor track season, which kicks off Dec. 4 with the Shocker Multis.
