WICHITA, Kan. – Another rough night on the offensive end dropped Wichita State to 0-3 to begin American Athletic Conference play, falling to Memphis 71-50 Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (7-9, 0-3) converted on only 2-of-27 attempts from beyond the arc for a season low 7 percent and finished at just 28 percent overall to go with 25 turnovers. Memphis shot 41 percent from the field.
Jaida Hampton was the lone Shocker in double-figures with 10 points, despite shooting 4-of-16 from the floor.
Raven Prince added nine points and
Seraphine Bastin pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds.
Alana Davis led all scorers with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Jada Stinson and Jamirah Shutes added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Both teams started the game slow shooting the ball with WSU hitting just three of its first 12 and Memphis 1-of-5. A Tiger 7-0 run gave Memphis a 13-7 lead with 1:52 remaining, forcing a Shocker timeout.
Each team would add one more basket in the final minute to give the Tigers a 15-9 lead after 10 minutes. Wichita State finished the period just 4-of-18 from the field and 0-for-7 from long range.
Memphis upped its lead to 12 just over three minutes into the second quarter behind six unanswered points and three straight Shocker turnovers. Following a
Carla Bremaud three-pointer, Memphis stretched its lead to 35-16 after another 8-0 run with 2:19 to play in the half.
Wichita State would hold Memphis scoreless over the final 2:19 to trim the lead to 35-20 at halftime. Bremaud was the only Shocker with more than two points after 20 minutes, as she led with seven.
The Shockers finished the half shooting 21 percent (6-for-28) to go with 13 turnovers. WSU would also miss 13 of its 14 three-pointers. On the other side, Memphis hit 13-of-34 attempts (38 percent) and 12 points off WSU miscues.
Alana Davis led all scorers with 11 first half points.
Turnovers continued to hurt Wichita State in the opening minutes of the third quarter with the Shockers committing seven in the first three minutes. Memphis wasn't able to take advantage on the other end, however, due to missing seven of its first eight field goal attempts.
A
Raven Prince offensive rebound and putback pulled Wichita State within 13 at the 2:00 minute mark and back-to-back defensive stops, but would not score again in the frame. The Tigers would score the final five points, pushing the lead back to 18, 49-31.
Six of the first seven points in the fourth quarter would belong to the Shockers thanks to a pair of Prince layups and Hampton floater. WSU then sliced the lead to 10 following a Hampton corner three, forcing a Tiger timeout with 6:07 to play.
Wichita State had two looks on the offensive end to cut the lead to single digits, but couldn't get shot to fall, and Memphis would take advantage. The Tigers used another 6-0 spurt to open it back up, 61-45, and only 2:50 remaining.
