LAKE CHARLES, La. – Wichita State scored the winning run in the top of the ninth to defeat McNeese State 11-10 and sweep the three-game series.
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, while
Greyson Jenista went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a home run.
Closer
Tommy Barnhouse earned the win with two shutout innings and two strikeouts.
Starter
Connor Lungwitz went 2.1 innings and gave up three runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.
The Shockers took an early lead in the second.
Dayton Dugas led off with a single and scored on a one-out double by
Travis Young for the 1-0 lead. After Young stole third, he scored on a
Gunnar Troutwine groundout.
Jordan Boyer followed with his first home run of the year to push the lead to 3-0.
Greyson Jenista led off the third with a walk and moved to third on a single from
Alec Bohm. Jenista scored on a Cowboy error as the catcher tried to pick Bohm off at first.
The Cowboys used a big inning to pull close in the third. McNeese used two singles, three walks and a sacrifice fly to score three runs and pull within 4-3.
The Shockers answered with a run in the fourth. With one out, Young walked and moved to third on a single from Troutwine. Boyer's safety squeeze brought Young home for a 5-3 lead.
McNeese added a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4, but the Shockers got it back in the sixth after a Cowboy error for a 6-4 lead.
After the Cowboys pulled within 6-5, the Shockers put up three runs in the top of the seventh. Jenista reached on an error to lead off the inning and Bohm's single moved him to third.
Jacob Katzfey's pinch-hit single scored Jenista and
Alex Jackson's double to right-center scored Bohm and Katzfey for a 9-5 lead.
Again the Cowboys answered. A three-run home run from Jacob Stracner and a two-run shot from Shane Selman put the Cowboys in front 10-9.
The lead didn't last for long as Jenista's home run in the eighth tied the score at 10.
With two outs in the ninth, Young walked and stole second. After Troutwine was intentionally walked, Boyer singled through the left side to score Young and put the Shockers up 11-10.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Feb. 23 when they host Omaha at Eck Stadium at 3 p.m. The two teams play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
