Smith Tabbed Freshman of the Week by The American

WICHITA, Kan. - Freshman forward Shyia Smith has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

The Idabel, Okla., native led the Shockers to their lone win of the week last Tuesday against Grambling State - the annual Kids Day Game. WSU defeated the Tigers, 70-61, behind Smith's team-high 15 points (9-of-11 from the free throw line) and eight rebounds. She set new season highs in rebounds (8), free throws made (9) and attempted (11).

Over her last two games, Smith has scored 32 points and pulled down 11 boards. Prior to her best two-game stretch of the season, the freshman had logged a total of 26 points over the first eight games.

It is the first Freshman of the Week honor for Wichita State since becoming a member of The American last year.

Smith and the Shockers are on the road this week for the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas, Nev. Wichita State will play two games in Vegas beginning with Northwestern on Wednesday, Dec. 19 and finishing against Kansas or Washington State on Thursday, Dec. 20.
