Johnson Leads Shocker Multi After Day One

WICHITA, Kan. – Ben Johnson set two personal bests to lead the Shocker Multi at the end of day one in the Heskett Center.
 
After finishing second in the first two events, redshirt senior Ben Johnson won the last two events to take a commanding lead with 3,157 points at the end of day one.
 
Johnson started the day running a personal best 60m in 7.13 to finish second behind Noah Myers of Friends University. Johnson gained the overall lead after winning the shot put with a personal best mark of 15.03m/49-3.75, nearly three feet farther than his previous best. The Tonganoxie, Kan., native won the high jump clearing 1.93m/6-04 to further himself from the pack leading after day one by a little over 300 points.  
 
Sophomore Grant Downes had a stellar day setting three personal bests and placing top-5 in three of four events to finish day one in fourth place with 2,713 points. Downes set a personal best in the 60m (7.16), long jump (6.59m/21-7.5) and high jump (1.78m/5-10).
 
Lucas Shaffer and Davis Dubbert each set two personal bests. Shaffer ended day one in seventh place (2,462 points) setting personal bests in the long jump (6.17m/20-3) and shot put (10.48m/34-4.75), while Dubbert finished the day in ninth place (2,343 points) with personal bests in the long jump (5.77m/18-11.25) and shot put (11.15m/36-7).
 
Noah Myers of Friends University finished day one in second place with 2,855 points, while Matthew Pieper of Fort Hays State sits in third with 2,810 points. Rounding out the top-5 is unattached Wichita State student-athlete Chonnor Ludolph with 2,610 points.
 
Day two of the Shocker Multi continues tomorrow with the beginning of the women's pentathlon 60m hurdles at 11:30 a.m., followed by the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles at 11:45 a.m.
