Koskei Travels North for NCAA Championships

11/16/2018 8:45:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. – Winny Koskei continues her postseason success with the 2018 NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis.

The redshirt sophomore qualified for the NCAA Championship race with a third place finish in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 9, the first Shocker to qualify since Aliphine Tuliamuk in 2012.

"I'm excited and nervous at the same time," said Koskei "I'm excited because I will be racing against the best competition in the country, making it to nationals was one of my goals."

The Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course is the site of the 2018 NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Women will run the 6K race at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men at 11:45 a.m. FloTrack will be live streaming the event with coverage beginning at 10:30 a.m., until the conclusion of the awards ceremony.

Koskei makes her second appearance on the Thomas Zimmer course of the 2018 season, on Oct. 13 she finished 11th in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals 6K race with a then personal best time of 20:28.9.

"The reason we went to Pre-Nationals was to make sure if we had anyone qualified for nationals, that they knew the course and what to expect before we got there," said head cross country coach Kirk Hunter "I'm extremely excited for her, I think the first thing she was talking about at the beginning of the year was to be an All-American…the fact that she has this opportunity is incredible."

Koskei will be up against 361 runners, including 34 individual qualifiers and 31 qualified teams. Top-40 finishers earn All-America honors.
