WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State softball team defeated Seminole State, 7-1, at Wilkins Stadium behind a 12-hit, two home run performance, to move to 3-0 for the fall schedule.
After finishing the opening weekend 2-0, the Shockers went down early after a walk got the leadoff batter on base in the first inning before a single up the middle saw the Trojans take a 1-0 lead.
The Shockers got back on level terms at the bottom of the second with
Ryleigh Buck drawing a walk to get on base, before two sacrifice bunts from
Asea Webber and
Kaylee Huecker got Buck home.
Buck, who went 2-for-2 at-bat, then smashed a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth before
Cassidy Kelsheimer shot one over the center field fence for a solo home run to make it 3-1 in the fifth.
Seminole State attempted to rally but
Bailey Klitzke got the batters swinging in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to stop the comeback. After allowing a leadoff single and two bunt singles from the first three batters, Klitzke helped knock down the next three in order with a fly out, swinging strike out and pop out to third base to keep the Shockers in the lead.
In the bottom half of the eighth the Shockers offense took over with Luellen [who went 2-for-3] getting on base via an error, then getting home through a throwing error following a
Laurie Derrico single to center. Webber then hit a sac fly to center field to get Derrico home and push the lead to 5-1.
Luellen then scored on a wild pitch in the ninth before Derrico singled to get Caitlyn Bingham round the bases to make the final score, 7-1.
The Shockers used four pitchers with Klitzke leading the foursome with four strikeouts through three innings pitched.
Derrico led the offense with two RBI's and three hits while Luellen and Buck each scored two runs.
The Shockers now have a 10-day break in the fall schedule with Newman coming to Wilkins Stadium on Sept. 30, for a 10-inning game beginning at 12 p.m.
