WICHITA, Kan. -- The No. 50-ranked Wichita State women's tennis team will resume MVC play this weekend with two matches in Iowa. First, WSU will head to Des Moines to face Drake on Sat., April 8 at noon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Shockers will then travel to Waterloo to play Northern Iowa on Sun., April 9 at 10 a.m. at Byrnes Park. The Shockers are carrying an 82-match MVC win streak into the weekend.
The Shockers (11-7, 3-0 MVC) are currently ranked No. 50 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings, and are coming off a 4-3 upset of No. 35 Tulsa earlier this week on Wed., April 5. The win marked WSU's sixth-straight win, all of them on the road. No players are ranked for WSU, but
Tanaporn Thongsing (23-9),
Gabriela Porubin (20-10) and
Giulia Guidetti (20-12) all have reached the 20-win mark this year. Guidetti was named MVC Player of the Week on Monday, after a strong showing last week against Kansas State. Porubin is currently on a five-match winning streak. Freshman
Fatima Bizhukova has caught fire lately, as she has won seven consecutive matches, and is 11-1 when playing in the fourth flight. No Shockers are currently ranked.
Drake (8-6, 0-1 MVC) is coming off a close 4-3 loss to Northern Iowa. The Bulldogs do not have any ranked players, but is 7-2 at home this year, including four-straight wins at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Summer Brills is Drake's top player, carrying a 14-8 overall singles record, is 8-2 when competing in the top flight, and has won five-straight contests. Joely Lomas (16-6 overall, 8-2 in dual play) is carrying a four-match streak.
UNI (8-4, 1-0 MVC) picked up their first Valley win this year after defeating Drake for the first time since 2011. Jieke Stroobant (12-9 overall) holds down the top flight for the Panthers, where she's 6-5 so far this year. Gisela Kemper (14-5, 10-2 in duals) is 8-2 over her last ten matches.
Last year, WSU swept both teams during the regular season, defeating Drake 4-0 and UNI 7-0.

Wichita State closes out the regular season with a conference doubleheader on Sat., April 22 at the Coleman Tennis Complex, as the Shockers host Illinois State at 9 a.m. and then Bradley at 1 p.m.
