WSU Wins Ninth Straight Tournament Title

4/30/2017 3:30:00 PM

Box Score NORMAL, Ill. – The No. 49 Wichita State women's tennis team won their ninth-straight Missouri Valley Conference Championship title today, sweeping Southern Illinois 4-0 at the Bloomington Tennis Center this afternoon. WSU ends conference play with an 89-match winning streak, and never lost a Valley match under head coach Colin Foster.

Fatima Bizhukova/Gabriela Porubin defeated Meagan Monaghan/Vitoria Beiroa 6-1 in the top flight. The No. 1 doubles All-MVC selection improved to 20-7 overall. They were the only duo to win a match in all three tournament matches. Tanaporn Thongsing/Ting-Ya Hsu soon followed with a 6-2 win over Xiwei Cai/Ana Sofia Cordero in the second flight, giving them 18 wins on the year. Marta Bellucco/Giulia Guidetti were down 2-5 to Polina Dozortseva/Athena Chrysanthou in the third flight before going unfinished.

In singles play, Bizhukova topped Chrysanthou 6-0, 6-1 in the third flight. The freshman All-MVC choice has won 14-straight contests, and improves to 21-6 overall. Porubin swept Meagan Monaghan 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth flight. The All-Valley pick has improved to 26-11 (17-6 duals), and remains perfect in her career against Valley opponents. Guidetti, the 2017 Player of the Year, captured the title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Cai in the top flight. Guidetti caps the regular season with a 24-13 overall record, and went 13-7 in the top flight. Thongsing, Hsu and Bellucco did not finish their matches.

"First, I want to congratulate SIU on another strong season," said Foster. "They've been our opponent in the finals three of the last five years, and is a well-coached, competitive and classy team. For this to be their last match as a program made today slightly bittersweet as I know how hard their coaches and players work and how much their team means to them. From our end, Tana(porn) and Tina played two of their better doubles matches the last two days, and that was the difference in the doubles point today. Once we secured that point, and got two quick points on the board from Fatya and Gaby, it was just a matter of time. SIU dug in and made us earn it, and it was fitting that Giulia, who has been outstanding in the top spot this year, was the clincher. In this run we've been on, we never take these moments for granted, and we appreciate the opportunity to represent WSU and the MVC in the NCAA Championships."

WSU finishes the regular season with an 18-8 record. The Shockers broke the Missouri Valley Conference women's record for consecutive championships, breaking the Missouri State women's swimming and diving streak of eight-straight titles from 2008-15. Foster leaves the Valley with a 55-0 regular season record, and a 23-0 record in the tournament to go with eight titles.
