WSU Scores Five in the 7th to Defeat Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Shockers scored five runs in the seventh inning to defeat Missouri State, 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Jenni Brooks got the start and threw her sixth complete game of the year and allowed just one run on six hits to receive her fourth win of the year.

Missouri State led off the second inning with a double to right field. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, the Bears tried a suicide squeeze, but Mackenzie Wright made a great play to get the out at home. A strikeout then ended the inning with the score still tied at zero.

With runners on first and second with no outs, the Bears tried to sacrifice bunt, but a strong throw from Madison Perrigan to third base got the lead runner.

The next batter hit a ball to Laurie Derrico who threw to Kelli Spring at second base. Spring then fired to first where the runner was called safe. The runner then got in a run down and was tagged out, but not before the runner from third scored to take a 1-0 lead.

After two quick outs in the top of the sixth, Macklin Hitz crushed a ball to left field to tie the game at one with her seventh home run of the year.

Perrigan led off the seventh with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt from Luellen. Ryleigh Buck then walked and a single from Wright gave WSU a 2-1 lead. Then back-to-back hits from Spring and McKenzie Adams scored two more runs to extend the lead to 4-1. With one out, Hitz doubled to left-center to score two more runs and give Wichita State a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

After giving up a leadoff single, Brooks collected three straight outs to end the game and give Wichita State a 6-1 win.

The Shockers are now 28-17 overall and 13-7 in MVC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they play a doubleheader against Northern Iowa at noon.
