CHICAGO, Ill. – The Wichita State softball team swept Loyola on day one, defeating the Ramblers by scores of 2-1 and 3-0.
Katie Malone started game one, throwing all seven innings and allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out four batters to receive her 16 win of the year.
Loyola took the lead in the second inning, on a solo home run to left field, for their only run of the game.
Wichita State came right back in the top of the third on a home run from
Mackenzie Wright to tie the game at one.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Madison Perrigan hit another solo home run to give Wichita State a 2-1 lead to put the game out of reach and give the Shockers the win in game one.
Malone also started game two, throwing all seven innings for the second time on the day and allowing zero runs on five hits to receive her 17 win of the season.
The Shockers were able to score first in game two, as
McKenzie Adams led off on a single and later came around to score on a double from
Macklin Hitz down the right field line to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Ramblers got the bases loaded with just one out, but were unable to score, with a groundout to the pitcher and a groundout to first base ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Shockers added to their lead on a solo home run from Perrigan and a pinch-hit double from
Asea Webber to make the lead 3-0.
After a leadoff single for the Ramblers, Malone collected three straight outs to give Wichita State a 3-0 win.
The Shockers are now 19-12 overall and 6-2 in MVC play. Wichita State will be in action tomorrow for the final game of the series with Loyola, beginning at 11 a.m.
