WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team plays in three road matches over the next three days, starting with UMKC on Friday at 12:30 p.m., Nebraska on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Toledo on Sunday at 9 a.m. Both the Nebraska and Toledo matches will be in Lincoln, Neb. at the Dillon Tennis Center, while the UMKC contest will be in Kansas City, Mo. at the Plaza Tennis Center.
Wichita State (7-6) is coming off a 2-4 loss to No. 21 Cornell back on March 11. The Shockers were previously ranked No. 50 in the Oracle/ITA team ranks, but dropped in this week's listing. WSU has won five of their last seven matches, with the other loss coming to then-No. 7 Texas.
Haru Inoue is currently ranked No. 71 in singles play, and will look to pick up his 20th singles win on the year. Sophomore newcomer
Marius Frosa has been on a hot stretch recently, going 8-2 in his last ten matches, primarily in the fifth flight.
UMKC (6-4) has won two of their last six matches, but two of the losses during that stretch came against No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 46 Arkansas. The Kangaroos have no ranked players in singles or doubles.
Nebraska (2-8) lost their first seven matches of the spring, but rebounded to win two of their last three matches, with both wins coming at home and also includes a 4-3 win over UMKC. The Huskers have no players ranked.
Toledo (9-6) is trending upward, having won of seven of their last eight matches, with the loss coming against No. 31 Louisville. The Rockets don't have any ranked players, but are led by Stjepan Sisko, who has an 11-3 singles record, all in the top flight. Sisko and teammate Ernie Suksathaporn are 12-5 in doubles play, while Vince Anzalone/Serjen Olmedo are 10-3
.
Last year, WSU held off Nebraska 4-3 on Feb. 12 in Wichita, with Inoue getting the match-clinching victory.
Miroslav Herzan and
Eddie Stoica picked up singles wins as well, and the duo of Herzan/Inoue also helped the Shockers grab the doubles point. The Shockers also defeated last year in Wichita, sweeping the Kangaroos 4-0 on March 2.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Wichita State faces its toughest test of the year when the squad travels to Stillwater, Okla. on March 23 for a 5 p.m. showdown with No. 5 Oklahoma State at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
