WSU Falls to #9 OU In Front of Record Crowd

WICHITA, Kan. – In front of a Wilkins Stadium record 1,113 fans, the Wichita State softball team fell to No. 9 Oklahoma by a score of 7-3 after committing four errors Wednesday night.

The new Wilkins Stadium attendance record broke the old record of 1,103 which was set in 2014, also against Oklahoma.

On the day, Paige Luellen led the way for Wichita State, as she drove a three-run home run over the left field wall, driving in all three runs that Wichita State scored today.

Katie Malone got the start in the circle, throwing 4.1 strong innings and allowing four runs, only one of which was earned. Bailey Klitzke then entered the game and threw the final 2.2 innings and allowing three runs and two earned runs. Both Klitzke and Malone collected three strikeouts a piece.

Oklahoma got things going in the top of the second on a solo home run to right-center by Nicole Pendley to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sooners added another run in the top of the third after Alissa Dalton reached on an error and later came around to score.

The Shockers did not go down quietly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kelli Spring began things by reaching on an error. After a single from Macklin Hitz and a strikeout from Laurie Derrico, Paige Luellen crushed a two-out home run to give the Shockers their first and only lead of the day, 3-2.

Oklahoma quickly struck back in the top of the fifth, with the Shockers committing three errors in the inning and allowing three runs to cross the plate to give Oklahoma the lead, 5-3.

Again in the sixth, OU was able to scratch across two runs. After Caliegh Clifton hit a two-out double and Dalton walked, Sydney Romero hit a triple to right field that scored both runners and pushed the lead to 7-3.

The Shockers went down in order in the sixth and the seventh inning, giving Oklahoma the 7-3 victory.

Wichita State is now 9-3 overall and will be in action on Friday, March 3, against North Texas at 1:30 p.m., in the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
