Wichita State closes out its 2016-17 home slate this weekend when Loyola and Indiana State come to town. The Shockers host Loyola Friday night at 7 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena before a Senior Day matchup with Indiana State Sunday at 2 p.m.
Quickly -WSU is fourth in The Valley at 7-7 with four games remaining. Loyola is 10th at 1-13 while Sunday's opponent, Indiana State is tied for fifth at 6-8.
-On Sunday, WSU will recognize four seniors from this season's roster in
Hannah Mortimer,
Marija Pacar,
Brittany Martin and
TaQuandra Mike.
-WSU is coming off a 76-69 win at Bradley Sunday and a 54-50 loss at Illinois State on Friday night. Loyola and Indiana State both lost to Drake and UNI last weekend, while ISU's loss to UNI was in overtime, 61-59.
-Former Shocker Head Coach Linda Hargrove was named Shocker Head Coach Jan. 22. She was the fourth head coach in Shocker history, and is now the eighth head coach. She was 113-136 at WSU in nine seasons, and had a collegiate coaching record of 429-248 in 26 seasons.
-Hargrove is now 117-139 at WSU in a 10th season and 433-251 overall. The Evansville win was her first in Charles Koch Arena since returning to the bench.
-Assistant Coach Kirk Crawford was the acting head coach for WSU's wins against Bradley and Illinois State Jan. 20/22. WSU defeated Illinois State, 67-45, and Bradley, 65-54.
-The Shockers are 491-539 in conference play since 1982 in the Gateway (1982-91) and Missouri Valley Conferences (1992-Present).
On the Series... Friday's game will mark the 10th game in series history, dating to Dec. 2009 when the two teams played a non-conference game that the Shockers won, 62-54. WSU leads the overall series, 8-1, and is 7-1 since LU entered the MVC in 2013-14. WSU has one MVC Tournament win against the Ramblers, 59-42, in the first game of the tournament in 2015. WSU won, 83-64, in the earlier meeting in Chicago on Jan. 29.
On Loyola... Loyola begins its final road trip of the 2016-17 regular season this evening when it takes on Wichita State here inside Charles Koch Arena. The Ramblers are in search of their first win inside the famed Roundhouse after falling in each of their first four tries. There is a new face at the head of the Rambler bench this season. Kate Achter was named the ninth head coach in program history on July 19, 2016. The Ramblers returned a trio of letterwinners from last season's team in junior leading scorer Katie Salmon (8.8 ppg) and sophomores Citiana Negatu and Brandi Segars to go along with a group of seven newcomers. Salmon also leads in rebounding at 6.1 per game. Drake continued its perfect start to MVC play as it raced by Loyola, 86-42, last Sunday at Gentile Arena. Katie Salmon poured in a team-high 14 points to lead the Ramblers, while Kaitlyn Williams joined her in double figures with 10 points. Williams, Lauren Segars and Tiara Wallace all came away with two steals apiece on the defensive end.
In the First Meeting... Wichita State won its fifth-straight game, an 83-64 decision, at Loyola Jan. 29 behind four double-figure scorers, including 20 points from
TaQuandra Mike. Mike tied her season-high, while
Rangie Bessard had 17 points,
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage had a career-high 12 and
Kayla Williams had 10. WSU shot 53.3 percent for the game (32-60). WSU's 83 points were its second most of the season. Defensively, WSU forced 21 Rambler turnovers and held LU to 48.9 percent (23-47). Brandi Segars led the Ramblers with 15 points.
Lozada-Cabbage Breaks Out... Sophomore forward
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage collected her first double-double of the season with a career-high 13 points and career-high 17 rebounds to lead Wichita State to a 76-69 win Sunday afternoon at Bradley.
Tompkins Makes A Difference... Junior forward
Angiee Tompkins continues to have a presence in the paint as she averaged 13 points and 4.0 rebounds in WSU's two games last week. She shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from the field. She also averaged 2.0 steals. Against Bradley she had 18 points and four rebounds.
Shockers Face Key Injuries... WSU's leading scorer, Bessard, missed the Bradley game with an injury she sustained in Friday's game at Illinois State, while starting point guard
Keke Thompson missed her third-straight game with injury.
Bessard's Gets Game-Winner... Bessard averaged 20.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the Shockers' two games against Evansville and SIU, and hit the game winning shot against the Aces. For the week, she shot 51.4 percent (18-35) from the field and averaged 2.5 blocks, 2.0 steals and 2.0 assists. Against Evansville, she had 26 points and seven boards while making 11-of-19 shots. Against SIU, she had her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 boards.
Hargrove Gets "First" Home win... Linda Hargrove got her first Charles Koch Arena win in the game against Evansville, her "first" in the building since returning to the sideline. Her previous home wins came in the building when it was named Levitt Arena prior to the renovation. Her last home win came in her first stint in her last home game of the 1998 season, an 60-58 win against Indiana State.
Five-Straight... Wichita State's five-game winning streak, broken Feb. 5 against Missouri State, was its longest since the 2014-15 season when the Shockers won 12-straight to close out the regular-season and three-straight tournament games.
Bessard the Second... Bessard has scored in double-figures in 10-straight games and 16 of the last 17 she has played in.
She is the second-leading scorer in the Valley at 16.3 points a game. In Valley-only play, she has double-figures in the 12-of-13 games she has played and is also the second-leading scorer in MVC-only games at 16.8 a game.
Not Average... Junior
Rangie Bessard's career scoring average of 15.9 points a game through 46 games is on pace to finish in the Shocker Top 5 in history. She averaged 15.5 points a game a year ago in 24 games, and this year is at 16.3 a game. Marguerite Keeley averaged 20.8 points a game from 1975-77, while Allison Daniel averaged 14.9 points a game from 1982-86.
Martin Moves Up… With 18 blocks this season senior
Brittany Martin has 131 for her career and is 20 from moving into the Shocker Top 10. The Shocker record is 256 by Theresa Dreiling from 1979-83.
Rangie Fills It Up... After 25 games, the Shockers are led in scoring by Bessard (16.3) and Mike (8.2). Bessard also leads WSU on the boards with 7.4 a game. She had 17, 20, 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the first four games of the year, but was injured in the Stanford game and missed the Northeastern and Arkansas State games. In the 18 games since returning, she has had double-figure scoring in 16-of-17 games, and is averaging 16.8 ppg in Valley play.
