STARTING FIVE:
Â
1 --- FINE TUNING: WSU blitzed a pair of Division II exhibition foes by an average of 47.5 points. In the two wins, the Shockers shot a combined 57.3% and outrebounded opponents by an average of +20. WSU finished with 43 assists on 71 baskets and posted a tidy 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. Ten different Shockers averaged at least 7.0 points, led by
Darral Willis Jr. (13.5),
Samajae Haynes-Jones (11.5),
Rauno Nurger (11.0) and
Shaquille Morris (10.0).
Â
2 --- SEEKING ROO-VENGE:Â The Roos are the last road team to win a November game at Charles Koch Arena. Since dropping a three-point decision to UMKC on Nov. 19, 2008, WSU has won 25-straight November home contests... In the Marshall Era (2007-to present), UMKC is one of just three teams to claim with a regular season, non-conference win at Charles Koch Arena, where WSU is 61-3.
Â
3 --- OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: Injured point guard
Landry Shamet played 12 minutes in Monday's exhibition. The All-American candidate has spent the past 13 weeks recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot. He finished with eight points on 3-of-3 shooting. This week Shamet was named to watch lists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Naismith Trophy and the Lute Olson Award.
Â
4 --- STARTING STRONG: The Shockers open at home for the 14th consecutive year. They've won 15 openers in a row and 23-of-24 since 1992, with the lone blemish coming in November, 2001 against Delaware at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska... This ties for the second-earliest season opener for a WSU team. The 2012-13 Shockers opened on Nov. 10. The 2013-14 team kicked off its regular season on Nov. 9... The Shockers have won 21-consecutive regular season home openers. Their last setback came Dec. 4, 1995 to Northern Illinois (77-52)… WSU is 95-18 all-time in such games. That includes a 54-7 mark at the Roundhouse, which opened its doors in 1955. The team has won all 14 home openers since the building's 2003 renovation and rededication as Charles Koch Arena.
Â
5 --- NO CUPCAKES: For the fourth-consecutive year, WSU will open up against a team coming off of a postseason appearance. The Shockers banked wins over South Carolina State (2016 CIT), Charleston Southern (2015 NIT) and New Mexico State (2014 NCAA) in their three previous openers. All three games were decided by 17+ points.
