HEAD COACH GREGG MARSHALL ON....
Â
…The win tonight
"We played very well for 20 minutes, got a 30-point lead, [and] kind of coasted in the second half. Drake played much better, and we weren't so good in the second half, but we'll take a 25-point win. I'll take that anytime, especially in league play. We'll continue to try and get better, try to do 40 minutes of quality basketball."
Â
…The Shockers quick start
"We started well, the whole first half…At one point we were up 30-something and then end up 30 at the half. We outrebounded them by 24. We were very active and aggressive. [We] gave up 44 in the second half, so that's not very good."
Â
…What Drake did well in the second half
"They made some shots. They missed a lot of shots in the first half. Some of them were credit to us. Others they just missed. We weren't as intense. We weren't as defensive minded, nor rebounding-minded. The air came out of the balloon a little bit for us, and I've got to do a better job of not letting that happen. When you are up 30 at halftime it's human nature, I guess. "
Â
…McDuffie's rebounding numbers improving
"Yeah, he got four offensive rebounds because he's going. He's 6'8, he's long and he's athletic. He's just got to 'go', and he's starting to do that more. We ask our 3-4-5 [positions] to go every time there is a shot taken. Tonight he was in there and the balls bounced his way. He had double-digit rebounds. I just think he's got to continue to 'go', and if you don't 'go,' there is very little chance you are going to get it unless it just bounces out to you. "
Â
…Shamet's strong assist-to-turnover ratio
"Landry is trying to be cautious with the ball, securing the ball with two hands, not trying to do things he can't do. He's giving us a chance to get a shot up every time. It's a mindset. You have to be very cautious and smart and tough with the ball, or you're going to be sloppy, careless, and flippant when you have the ball. Hopefully we can get the rest of the guys to think more like him."
Â
…Attacking the paint in the first half
"We just wanted to get our athleticism into the game. We knew it was going to be a fast-paced game. I don't know if we [ran] out of energy in the second half or what. We were able to get out in transition. When you get a lot of defensive rebounds you don't have to take the ball out of the net. Things were really flowing freely inside and out. I thought we were playing very good basketball in the first half."
Â
MARKIS McDUFFIE ON...
Â
…The tale of two halves
"We came out strong… We just try to put that pressure on early and let [opponents] know that this is our house and it's not going to be easy. [In] the second half, we let off a little bit. We just got to learn to be relentless and consistent. Teams are not going to give up against us, no matter what the score is, so we have to continue to play hard."
Â
…What Drake did in the second half
"They played a lot harder. They were down 30 [at half]...I'm pretty sure their coach got on them. They came out playing harder than we did, and it showed out there. They started to make shots. We just got to be consistent for a whole game. We have to play hard for 40 minutes, that's our [issue] right now."
Â
...Root causes of the team's successful ball movement
"It's in practice every day: we learn to move the ball when we run our plays, and just play together. We have a lot of guys who can score...Everybody has to eat and go get theirs, and if we play as a team and do that, we should be fine."
Â
…His improved rebounding lately
"The knee's feeling better. I'm about 90-100% now, I'm feeling better coming after [winter] break. I'm just trying to be more aggressive and tougher as a basketball player, and show [the coaches] that I'm a tough, hard-nosed guy and a complete player."
Â
DAISHON SMITH ON...
Â
…The importance of starting strong and applying pressure on opposing defenses
"It sets the tone early. It lets the bench and coaches know that you're coming to play. Coming out early and putting pressure on the [opponent's] defense allows everybody to know that it's our game from the jump; let's not play around."
Â
…His increased shooting volume
"I think it's the flow of the offense. Guys are moving the ball around, finding seams in the defense to get open shots. We get a lot of shots up throughout the week [in practices]. It's my job to knock them down when they're open."
Â
LANDRY SHAMET ON...
Â
...Attacking the paint tonight
"I think a majority of it was that we were trying to beat them down the floor in transition. They like to set up in a zone and throw different defenses at you, so we just talked about beating them in transition. We got a lot of buckets early in the shot clock in the first half because of that."
