WSU Wins 8th-Straight Regular Season Crown

Box Score | Photo Gallery

WICHITA, Kan. – In a battle of Missouri Valley Conference unbeatens, No. 26 Wichita State downed Southern Illinois 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex, to claim the program's eighth-consecutive MVC regular season title.

WSU (24-3) also secured the top-seed in next weekend's MVC Tournament by virtue of a 7-0 conference record. The host Shockers will take on eighth-seeded Evansville in Friday's quarterfinal opener, beginning at 9:00 a.m. CT.

The Shockers' eight-straight conference crowns is the longest women's regular season title streak in MVC history - in any sport – and they've done it in dominant fashion, winning 76-straight against conference foes.

The 2015-16 team claimed 42 of a possible 43 dual points from its seven Valley opponents. In 56 MVC regular season matches from 2009-16, WSU has dropped just 29 points.

Following the match, the Shockers honored their five outgoing seniors: Rebecca Pedrazzi, Julia Schiller, Summer Schlotterback, Abby Stevens and Aleksandra Trifunovic.

The victory over SIU improved WSU's overall, four-year mark to 82-25, making the Class of 2016 the winningest (by volume) in school history, ahead of the Class of 2009's 81-25 record.

In winning the regular season crown for the 10th time in 11 years, WSU turned back an SIU team that entered with a 5-0 conference mark.

The Shockers used wins on courts 2 and 3 to lock down the doubles point and won all 12 singles sets.

Schiller (No. 3 singles) and Pedrazzi (No. 2) made quick work of their opponents to put WSU on the doorstep, and Stevens officially clinched the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court No. 6.

Over the next 20 minutes, Giulia Guidetti (No. 4), Gabriela Porubin (No. 1) and Trifunovic (No. 5) closed out two-set wins of their own to provide the final margin.
