WSU Claims 4-2 Win over SIU on Senior Day

WICHITA, Kan. - Playing without its No. 1 singles and doubles player on Senior Day, Wichita State was able to hold off Southern Illinois, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Genesis Health Club.

The Shockers were once again without their senior captain, Tin Ostojic, who missed his fourth straight match due to an ankle injury. Ostojic and Sergio de Vilchez were recognized in between doubles and singles for their contributions to the program over the last four and two years, respectively. Ostojic will leave WSU as one of the best men's tennis players in school history, while de Vilchez has been a key figure in the lineup after transferring from Northwest Missouri State.

Wichita State bumped its record to 15-10 and 2-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Southern Illinois dropped to 12-4 and 1-1.

Southern Illinois got into the scoring column first by winning the doubles point at positions No. 2 and No. 3.

WSU came out in singles and collected two wins from Eddie Stoica and Jocelyn Devilliers. Stoica defeated Peter Molloy in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Devilliers had to fend off Jonny Rigby at the No. 2 spot, 7-6, 6-1.

The Salukis briefly tied the match up at 2-2 after Piotr Baranski defeated Miroslav Herzan in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Haru Inoue put the Shockers right back in front with his three-set win at No. 3 over Wilder Pimentel. Inoue dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to dominate sets two and three by scores of 6-1, 6-1.

Vitor Mendes came through with the match-clincher at No. 6 with a come from behind three-set win over Daniel Martinez. After losing the first set, 6-3, Mendes regrouped to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2.

The Shockers now turn their attention towards the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, which will be right here in Wichita at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex and Crestview Country Club from April 29 through May 1.
