LAWRENCE, Kan. -- No. 21 Wichita State defeated its fourth top-50 women's tennis foe of the spring season and improved to 5-3 against nationally-ranked competition with a 6-1 neutral court win over No. 46 New Mexico, Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

WSU (12-3) knocked off No. 23 Kansas on Friday and has won eight of its last nine duals.

"Across the board we are competing at a high level," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "For sure there are areas that we can continue improving, but for me the most important things are effort and attitude. Those continue to be constants."

The Shockers eliminated most of the suspense by taking the doubles point, then sweeping the first three singles matches to completion. Gabriela Porubin swept Andrea Leblanc at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1) Rebecca Pedrazzi dropped just two games in a straight-set win over Dominique Dulski at No. 3, and Giulia Guidetti took care of Ruth Copas on Court 5 (6-1, 6-4) to clinch the dual at 4-0.

New Mexico got on the board at No. 2 singles, but Aleksandra Trifunovic and Abby Stevens both battled for wins on Courts 4 and 6 in superset tiebreakers for the final 6-1 margin.

WSU continues a difficult stretch next Thursday at home against No. 49 SMU. It'll be the Shockers' fifth-straight match against a nationally-ranked opponent.

First serve against SMU on March 3 is slated for 12:30 p.m. CT at WSU's Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The Shockers will also meet UMKC that day, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
