COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Wichita State tied it up at the 5:18 mark of the fourth quarter, but couldn't take the lead as Missouri pulled away to take a 64-57 win Friday night inside Mizzou Arena.
Both teams shot an identical 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field but the Tigers were 11-of-17 from the line to the Shockers' 4-of-7 free throws. Each team also had seven treys. The Shockers fell to 3-5 while Mizzou improved to 8-3 overall.
WSU was led in scoring by
Rangie Bessard's 19 points as the Shockers' only double-digit scorer while MU's Lianna Doty had 15 points to lead the Tigers who had three in double-figures.
WSU led most of the first two quarters and held a 21-20 halftime lead. In the third quarter, MU took the lead, 28-21, with four-straight baskets by four different Tigers forcing a WSU timeout at 7:47. MU piled on another three by Lindsey Cunningham to extend it to 31-21 before WSU got its first basket of the quarter from
Brittany Martin at 6:56, and Bessard added a three at 6:23 to cut it to five, 31-26.
Over the next three minutes, MU extended the lead to as much as 11 at 4:19. The Tigers went on to out-score WSU, 26-16, in the quarter to take a 46-27 lead headed to the fourth. Stovall led WSU with five points in the third quarter with a trey and bucket.
In the fourth, WSU cut the lead to two, 47-45, at 8:02, and then tied it at 50-all, at 5:18 on a bucket by Bessard. From there, Mizzou out-scored WSU, 14-7, for the win.
WSU opened the game forcing five Mizzou turnovers in the first five and a half minutes that contributed to a 7-5 lead at the first media timeout at 4:14. Back-to-back baskets, including a three at 2:17, quickly extended WSU's lead to 12-5.
An
Angiee Tompkins basket and a
Tamara Lee three off-set five points from the Tigers and WSU closed the quarter up, 17-10, on 47 percent shooting. WSU's defense held Mizzou to 29 percent (4-14).
Seven points from Bessard, who had missed the last two and a half games for injury, led the Shockers in the quarter.
Each team didn't score through the 6:39 mark of the second quarter when Bessard put in a bucket to make the score 19-10, WSU. The Shockers held MU to its first basket of the quarter at 4:35, to close the gap to 19-12, WSU. An Amber Smith bucket at 3:02 cut into the lead again to start an 8-2 Tiger run to close the half and the lead to 21-20, WSU.
For the half, WSU's percentage fell to 34.6 percent (9-26) while MU shot 28.6 percent (8-28). Bessard led all scorers in the first half with 11 points. MU's Doty had six points to pace the Tigers.
Wichita State is next in action at the Shocker Winter Classic, Dec. 16-17, at home. WSU plays Abilene Christian (7 p.m.) and Incarnate Word (2 p.m.) on back-to-back days in the annual tournament inside Charles Koch Arena.
