McElroy Named Volunteer Assistant Coach

WICHITA, Kan. – Codey McElroy has been named the Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Wichita State baseball program, Head Coach Todd Butler announced Dec. 9.
 
"We are excited to announce Codey McElroy as our volunteer assistant for the Shockers in 2017," Butler said. "Codey played baseball at the University of Texas under legendary coach Augie Garrido and basketball at Oklahoma State under Travis Ford. His knowledge and experience in college baseball and basketball and professional baseball with the Atlanta Braves will enhance our players development on and off the field."   
 
McElroy comes to the Shockers after spending last season at Oklahoma State as a member of the men's basketball team and a graduate manager for the baseball team in the fall.
 
"I'm very excited and thankful for the opportunity Coach Butler has given me to get my coaching career started at a school with such great tradition," McElroy said. "He and his staff have done a great job of recruiting and getting things going in the right direction since he's been here, and I can't wait to be part of the Shocker family."
 
While he was at Oklahoma State, McElroy assisted the baseball coaching staff in everyday duties during the fall including practice duties as well as assisting the coaches on the infield, outfield and hitting.
 
Last summer, he served as the basketball summer camps coordinator at Saint Louis University, as well as the head baseball coach of the Red Dirt 17U travel select team.
 
He played baseball at Eastern Oklahoma State in 2012, Texas in 2013 and Cameron in 2014.
 
He was drafted as an outfielder in the 19th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves and played in the Braves organization until 2015. He finished his minor league career with a .210 average in 267 at bats with 56 hits, 12 doubles and two home runs.
 
During his junior season at Cameron, he hit .323 with a team-best 31 RBI as a shortstop. He started all 45 games and collected 50 hits, while earning first team all-conference honors. He also earned an ABCA Gold Glove in the South Central Region as a shortstop.
 
As a sophomore at Texas, he played in 18 games for the Longhorns with 16 starts. He had a .978 fielding percentage with 163 putouts, 14 assists and only four errors.
 
During his freshman season at Eastern Oklahoma State, he hit .276 with 53 hits, seven doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 33 RBI and four stolen bases.
 
McElroy, who is a native of Frederick, Okla., earned a bachelor's degree in university studies from Oklahoma State in 2016 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in educational leadership.
