CANCUN, Mexico - No. 11 Stanford (5-1) defeated Wichita State (1-4), 87-39, at the Cancun Challenge Friday morning on the second day of competition.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 20-11 first quarter lead and out-shot WSU, 62.3 percent (33-53) to 25.9 percent (14-54) for the game. Stanford's offensive prowess included an 84.6 percent (11-13) second quarter in which it out-scored WSU 26-4.
WSU was led in scoring by
Jeliah Preston's eight fourth-quarter points as no Shocker reached double-figures.
Stanford was led by Brittany McPhee's 13 points, while five other Cardinal scored in double-digits.
Wichita State wraps up competition 10 a.m., Central, on Saturday against Northeastern at the Cancun Challenge from the Hard Rock Hotel Rivera Maya Epic Ballroom.
Stanford extended the 46-15 halftime lead to 72-23 as it out-scored the Shockers 26-8 in the third quarter.
Keke Thompson and Angiee Thompkins had four points each for WSU in the third.
WSU came alive in the fourth, scoring nine points in the first three minutes of the final quarter, including two treys by
Jeliah Preston and one by
Tamara Lee, to cut the lead to 73-32.
The Shockers ended up winning the fourth quarter, 16-15, led by Preston's eight points. Lee had five points and Thompson, three points, in WSU's best scoring quarter in the 87-39 loss.
Stanford opened the game on a 7-0 run to force a Shocker called a timeout at 5:37 but answered with four-straight points, a trey and a later free throw from
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage.
Stanford then outscored WSU, 14-7, over the final 3:52 to take a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Cardinal then scored the first 17 points of the second quarter to go up 36-11 on the Shockers through the first five minutes.
Tamara Lee scored the first Shocker basket to stop the run at 4:37. WSU would score just one more basket in the half and Stanford would hold a 46-15 halftime lead.
WSU shot 23.1 percent (6-26) while the Cardinal shot 70 percent (17-24) for the half. McCall had 12 points for Stanford at the intermission while Lozada-Cabbage had four to lead the six Shocker first half scorers.
