CANCUN, Mexico - Wichita State built a 20-point lead in the third quarter, and held off Northeastern, 87-73, at the Cancun Challenge Saturday morning on the final day of competition.
The Shockers were led in scoring by
TaQuandra Mike and
Jeliah Preston, each who had 17 points.
Tamara Lee had 13 to back the two leading scorers. Mike also led WSU with seven rebounds, and Preston had five treys in the winning effort. Mike was named to the all-tournament team for her play.
Northeastern's Shannon Todd had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field which included four treys and a free throw to lead the Huskies.
WSU's press and trap defense created 25 Northeastern turnovers and the Shockers also shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field, which included 11 treys. WSU improved to 2-4 overall while Northeastern fell to 2-5. WSU completes the Cancun Challenge 1-2.
The third quarter opened with Northeastern continuing to slowly cut into the Shocker lead that was 47-32 at the half. Northeastern outscored WSU, 13-9 to pull within 11, 56-45, at the 4:21 media timeout.
Coming out of the timeout
Diamond Lockhart hit a three, which started WSU on a 10-1 run to close the third quarter and take a 20-point lead, 66-46.
In the fourth, WSU held the 20-point lead it built in the third on the back of five three's, including two by
Kayla Williams to win.
To open the game, WSU jumped out to a 9-2 lead capped by a basket by
Brittany Martin at 7:33, and by the 2:04 mark led 27-12, after an and-one by Lockhart. Preston's two treys during the run, and a third with 1:21 left helped the Shockers win the first quarter, 35-14.
The scoring slowed for WSU to open the second quarter, and Northeastern made up some ground over the first five minutes, out-scoring WSU, 8-5, to cut into the deficit, 40-22.
The Huskies used the second half of the second quarter to out-score WSU again, 10-7, to cut the deficit to 15, 47-32, at the end of the first two quarters. The Huskies were helped by the Shockers making just 5-of-10 free throws in the frame.
WSU was led in scoring at intermission with 11 points while Preston's nine backed her. Eleven Northeastern turnovers and the Shockers' 50 percent shooting (16-32) contributed to the 15-point Shocker lead at halftime.
Wichita State is next in action noon, Friday, Dec. 2, against Arkansas State in the Shockers' annual Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks game.
