Opening Tips // Throwback Missouri Valley Conference foes Wichita State and Tulsa continue the non-conference chapter of their rivalry when the Shockers (2-0) host the Golden Hurricane (0-1) Wednesday evening at Charles Koch Arena.
Nice Start // WSU is 2-0 after claiming weekend wins over South Carolina State (preseason runner-up pick in the MEAC) and Long Beach State (preseason Big West favorite) by a hefty margin of 83 points... A win over Tulsa would improve WSU to 3-0 for the fourth time in five years.
Â
Poll Vaulting // The Shockers sit just outside the top-25 after picking up 37 votes in the Associated Press poll (good for the equivalent of a No. 32 ranking) and 16 in the Coaches Poll (33rd overall). WSU has earned votes in either the AP or Coaches in all but six of the last 100 poll weeks, dating back to Dec. 12, 2011.
Â
Bench Bench-Mark // Throw out point totals from the Shocker starters, and WSU's reserves still outscored SCSU and LBSU by five points, 99-94. The Shockers' 54 bench points in Friday's win over SCSU was their highest total in 10 seasons under
Gregg Marshall.
Â
Deep Thoughts // Despite putting up 88.5 points in the two wins, no Shocker is currently averaging in double-figures. Ten players, however, are scoring between 5.5 and 9.5 points, and all of them played at least 10.0 minutes-per-contest over the weekend.
Â
Top Dog // Over one stretch of his standout prep career,
Conner Frankamp finished as North High's leading scorer in 48-consecutive games. However, it took a full 57 games (30 at Kansas, 27 at WSU) for Frankamp to do it for the first time at the collegiate level. The redshirt junior put up a career-high 15 points in Sunday's win over LBSU to lead a group of five Shockers who finished in double-figures.
Â
Building Blocks // Junior
Shaquille Morris' 4-block effort against Long Beach State upped his career total to 65. That's the 10th-highest for a Shocker since the block became an official NCAA statistic in 1985-86. Morris is on pace to eventually top that list, needing just 44 more to catch Claudius Johnson (109 from 1989-93). The overall record holder is Antoine Car (209 from 1979-83).
Â
Novembers to Remember // WSU's last November home loss came nearly eight years ago to UMKC. Since then, the Shockers have won 23-straight -- all by double digits.
Â
The Series with Tulsa // The teams meet for the seventh-straight year, continuing a rivalry that began 86 years ago...For half a century (1946-96) WSU and Tulsa competed side-by-side in the MVC... The Shockers lead the all-time series 64-61 and had won seven-in-a-row prior to last year's 77-67 setback at the Reynolds Center... WSU has taken the last four meetings in Wichita, dating back to 2001... Despite dropping the first five games from 1997-2002, WSU is 7-6 in the post-Valley, non-conference era of this series.
Â
Old Rivals, Fresh Faces // Some perspective: When Tulsa and WSU played their final MVC matchup on Feb. 24, 1996, current Shockers
C.J. Keyser,
Markis McDuffie,
Austin Reaves and
Landry Shamet had not yet been born.
Zach Bush, the eldest Shocker (9-6-1993), was just shy of 2 1/2 years old.
Â
Nice to Meet You // Tulsa must replace nine seniors from last year's 20-win team that reached the NCAA First Four...The Hurricane roster includes just one player (TK Egodi) who saw time in the Hurricane's last trip to Wichita in 2014. Egodi played 14 minutes in that game without recording a stat...
Rashard Kelly,
Zach Brown,
Rauno Nurger and
Shaquille Morris combined for four points in 37 Shocker minutes in that game.
Â
Familiar Face // Tulsa junior guard Corey Henderson Jr. was a freshman of WSU's 2015 Sweet 16 team, appearing in 28 of the 35 contests while averaging 1.9 points per game. Henderson nailed a three and grabbed one rebound in one minute in WSU's 75-55 win over Tulsa on Nov. 29, 2014. After playing his sophomore season at Blinn College in Texas, Henderson signed on with Tulsa.
Â
Revenge Factor // WSU will look to avenge a 77-67 stumble at Tulsa on Nov. 17 of last year.
Fred VanVleet gutted out 30 minutes on a bad hamstring and finished with 11 points and three assists. Nine of those points came over a memorable 90-second stretch to end the first half when VanVleet burried back-to-back-to-back threes to rally the Shockers from eight-down to a 31-30 halftime lead...
Ron Baker played 39 minutes and finished wit a team-high 23 points and four steals... The senior trio of Baker, VanVleet and
Anton Grady combined for 52 of the Shockers' 67 points...
Landry Shamet, who would play just three games before suffering a season-ending stress fracture, scored four points and grabbed three steals but fouled out in just 10 minutes of action.
Â
Loud Noises // WSU 56-1 at home in regular season, non-conference games since November of 2008, with the only loss coming to a Final Four bound VCU in a 2011 Bracket Busters matchup.. Including postseason NIT games, the Shockers have won 38 non-conference home games in a row (the nation's second-longest streak behind Duke).
Â
Non-Conference Numbers to Know // WSU has won over 84 percent of its non-conference regular season games since the start of the 2011-12 season, going a combined 53-10… The Shockers are in search of their 19
th consecutive winning non-conference record.
Â
Random Knowledge // The Shockers are 94-38 all-time in November (.712) and own a winning record on all but two dates within the month. One of them is Nov. 16 (3-3)... Somewhat topical, in light of the opponent, Nov. 16 is also the 109th anniversary of Oklahoma's statehood. It was admitted to the Union as the 46th state back in 1907.
Â
Coming Up // WSU plays the last of four-consecutive home games to start the year on Sunday against Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES). The 2 p.m. tip will be carried statewide on Cox Channel Kansas (Cox HD 2022) and in the Kansas City Area on Time Warner SportsChannel 2. Fan outside of the two markets can catch the game on ESPN3.
