Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Despite forcing 23 turnovers throughout the game, Wichita State fell to Drake, 87-56, Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
As a team, the Shockers shot just 31 percent while the Bulldogs were able to shoot 58 percent. Wichita State was also outrebounded in the game, 46-23.
WSU was led by
Rangie Bessard, giving the Shockers a team-high 20 points and also a team-high seven rebounds.
TaQuandra Mike also gave Wichita State some help, scoring 16 points.
Drake was led by Lizzy Wendell, scoring a game-high 27 points and adding five rebounds and five assists, while Sara Rhine contributed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Wichita State defense came out strong to start the game, forcing six Drake turnovers, but the Bulldogs shot 55 percent from the field and took an early 20-11 lead over the Shockers.
Back-to-back baskets by Bessard and Mike cut the lead to five at the end of the first quarter, 20-15.
The Shockers battled hard to begin the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run that helped WSU take their first lead of the game, 24-22, with 6:30 left to play in the second quarter.
Wichita State continued their strong second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs, 20-12 and also forcing Drake to commit eight more turnovers, pushing its total to 14 and giving the Shockers a 35-32 lead heading into halftime.
Drake fought back to begin the third quarter outscoring the Shockers 12-7 and regained the lead, 44-42 with six minutes to play in the third quarter.
Coming out of the media timeout, Drake went on a 12-0 run to help push their lead to 58-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Drake found its shooting touch at the beginning of the fourth quarter, making three three-pointers and pushing their lead to 72-49 with 4:55 left to play in the game.
The Bulldogs finished the fourth quarter in dominant fashion, pushing their lead to 31, giving Drake an 87-56 victory.
The Shockers fall to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in MVC play on the season, and will be in action again on Friday, Jan. 15 as the Shockers travel to Chicago, Ill., to face Loyola at 7 p.m.
