TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  --  Wichita State (3-9, 0-1) couldn't overcome a 32-14 halftime deficit and a 20.8 percent (11-53) shooting night to drop its Missouri Valley Conference-opener, 59-33, Friday night inside the Hulman Center.

WSU was led in scoring by TaQuandra Mike's 18 points, nine which came late in the fourth quarter. Diamond Lockhart was next with six points. Rangie Bessard had seven rebounds to lead WSU.

ISU was led in scoring by Cierra Ceazer who had 19 points, while Tierra Webb had 12 points. Kelsey Dirks had 10 rebounds.

For the first time this season WSU dressed 11 players who were available to see playing time while 10 saw minutes. Brittany Martin was the latest injured Shocker released as she played a limited role off the bench. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, who saw her first regular-season playing time after being released for the exhibition game Dec. 29, got her first collegiate start.

In the fourth quarter, ISU out-scored WSU, 20-15, which was the Shockers' best offensive quarter led by Mike's nine points from three treys. Pacar hit her first basket of the game in the fourth quarter.

ISU took its largest lead of the game at 30, 51-21, into the media timeout of the fourth quarter by out-scoring the Shockers, 12-3, as WSU's shooting drought fell to five percent (1-20).

In the third quarter, WSU shot its first free throws of the game at the 8:26 mark when Bessard drove to the basket and got fouled, but the quarter started slow offensively for both teams again through the first five minutes with just three points scored and ISU holding a 36-15 lead.

Mike scored WSU's first field goal of the half with 1:58 remaining to close the ISU lead to 38-17 with ISU winning the third quarter, 7-4.

WSU shot eight percent (1-12) in the third quarter with ISU shooting 22 percent (2-9).

For the half, WSU shot 25 percent (6-24) from the field to ISU's 44 percent (12-27) effort. ISU's Ceazer led all scorers with 10 points, while WSU's top offense came from Lockhart and Mike, who each had six in the half.

In the second quarter, ISU took control after a four-minute Shocker scoring drought four a 10-0 run over the final 3:47 to take a 18 point lead, 32-14. ISU won the second quarter, 17-4.

Indiana State won the first quarter, 15-10, after a slow offensive start by both teams through the first media timeout at 4:52 when ISU held a 5-3 lead. Mike's two three-pointers kept WSU close in the first frame, while Ashley's five points led ISU. Eight WSU turnovers in the first frame limited their scoring opportunities.

The Shockers are next in action 2 p.m., Sunday at Illinois State, which lost, 73-51, to Missouri State in Normal, Ill.
