WICHITA, Kan. – On the second weekend of their fall season, the Shocker softball team defeated Creighton, 5-1 and Tulsa, 9-5 on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Wilkins Stadium.
In the first game of the day against Creighton, senior
Katie Malone pitched a complete game, only giving up one run on five hits. There were also nine different Wichita State hitters that collected one hit.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as
Kelli Spring,
Brittany Fortner, and
Cacy Williams all scored runs. In the top of the fifth, the Bluejays scored their first and only run of the game. A pinch-hit triple by
McKenzie Adams and a homerun by
Macklin Hitz gave the Shockers a 5-1 victory.
In the second game for Wichita State, the Shockers were the visiting team on the scoreboard against the University of Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second inning, but strong pitching by sophomore
Kelsey Sterneker only allowed one run for the remainder of the game. Sophomores
Mackenzie Wright and
McKenzie Adams who both collected three hits led the Shockers.
A four run third inning gave the Shockers their first lead of the game at 5-4. Adding two more runs in the top of the fourth pushed the Shocker lead to 7-4. The Golden Hurricane began a comeback, scoring one in the bottom of the fifth, but a two run homerun in the top of the sixth inning by
Paige Luellen gave the Shockers a 9-5 win.
The Shockers will be in action again on Wednesday, Sept. 30 against Hutchinson Community College at 6 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
