Gregurovic, Ostojic Advance to Sweet 16

NCAA Singles Draw | NCAA Doubles Draw | Tournament Central

WACO, Texas – Wichita State's doubles team of Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic are one victory away from All-American status. The pair posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Texas A&M's Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo on Thursday in first round action at the NCAA Tournament.

Earlier in the day, Ostojic saw his singles draw run come to an end with a 6-4, 6-2 setback to Texas Tech's Felipe Soares.

Gregurovic and Ostojic (ITA No. 41) were originally slated to meet Oklahoma's duo of Dane Webb and Axel Alvarez in the first round of the 32-team draw, but the Sooner pair withdrew due to illness and were replaced by Efferding and Szabo (ITA no. 56).

"We did not make Texas A&M earn it early on in the match and got off to a slow start in the first set," WSU head coach Brad Louderback said. "But Greg and Tin know each other so well, and there are not many situations that they haven't faced this year. They were definitely tested today, but I think that will help prepare them for tomorrow."

Gregurovic and Ostojic improved to 30-4 on the year and are 3-2 now against nationally-ranked foes.

WSU's quest for a quarterfinal bid will be difficult. Gregurovic and Ostojic face Georgia's top-seeded team if Austin Smith and Ben Wagland (17-3) Friday at Noon.

"They've played high-quality doubles all year and are excited for the challenge," Louderback added.

In singles action, Ostojic recorded WSU's first NCAA singles win in 19 years on Wednesday with a first round victory but couldn't carry the momentum into the Round of 32.

"We had a good game plan against Felipe, but he played tough. Congratulations to him," Louderback said. "I'm so proud of Tin. He's so special to me and had an outstanding year. He dedicated himself and worked very hard throughout the season. My heart really goes out to him."

Soares (ITA No. 37) improved to 22-14. Ostojuc (ITA no. 52) finished the year with a 22-9 singles mark.
