Shocks Sweep Aces With 10-0 Win

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan.
 – Wichita State used 7.2 shutout innings from Chase Williams to defeat Evansville 10-0 in eight innings.

Williams had his best start as a Shocker as he shut down the Aces bats, only giving up six hits, while striking out six. Connor Strain pitched five innings for the Aces, giving up three runs on four hits, but received the loss.

At the plate the Shockers continuously loaded the bases. The team was led by Mikel Mucha, 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Bob Arens, 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

The start of the game was a pitchers duel with a total of only four hits coming through the first three and a half innings. Everything changed for the Shockers in the fourth as they walked the bases loaded. Then with two out, Mucha got an infield single to score a run. Arens then came through with a two-RBI single. After four innings the Shockers led 3-0.

After the seventh inning stretch the Shockers put some more pressure on the Aces. Daniel Kihle led off the inning with a walk and then stole second. Sam Hilliard walked to put runners on first and second and Ryan Tinkham got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gunnar Troutwine, Chase Rader, and Mucha then came through with an RBI single, hit by pitch and walk, respectively to earn an RBI each. Tanner Kirk then had a sacrifice fly to left field scoring one run and moving the other two runners up to second and third. Arens walked, reloading the bases. Zach Reding then pitch hit for Trey Vickers. He smashed a ball to centerfield, but an amazing catch from the UE centerfielder saved extra bases and resulted in him only getting a sacrifice fly. In the end 10 batters came to the plate in the seventh inning, resulting in five runs scored and an 8-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Williams got the first two outs and then they called in Chandler Sanburn from the bullpen. With an inherited runner on first, Sanburn immediately got a groundout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Shockers picked up right where they left off. Hilliard singled to start the inning, Tinkham and Rader then walked to load the bases. Mucha came through with another single scoring one. Kirk ended the game by grounding out, but getting a run across bringing the score to 10-0 and bringing the run-rule into effect.

The Shockers will be back in action at Eck Stadium on Tuesday versus Oral Roberts at 6:30 pm.
