Shockers Walk Off With 7-6 Win Over ORU

WICHITA, Kan. –
 Chase Rader's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave Wichita State a 7-6 win over Oral Roberts in the final home game of the regular-season. The Shockers host the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament May 20-23.

Sam Hilliard got the start for the Shockers. He threw 6.2 innings giving up four runs, three earned, while scattering six hits and striking out three. John Hayes got the win throwing 2.1 innings in relief.

Chase Rader went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead the offense. Mikel Mucha also had a solid day at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Daniel Kihle led off the game by popping a ball into short right field. The second basemen dropped the ball, resulting in Kihle making it all the way to second. Ryan Tinkham, with a runner on third, hit a sacrifice fly to left, which was dropped by the left fielder. The error put him on first. Chase Rader followed that up by hitting a ball to dead away center, over the center fielders head, scoring a run and giving him a triple. Mikel Mucha brought in the third run of the inning by executing a perfect bunt single. After one complete the Shockers led 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, Keenan Eaton walked to start things off. Then Trey Vickers and Sam Hilliard singled loading the bases. Tinkham then came through with his second sacrifice fly of the game. After loading the bases the Shockers were only able to score one run, but after two they led 4-0.

Anthony Sequeira and Audie Afenir began the fifth for the Eagles with back-to-back singles. Rolando Martinez then came up with one out and hit a groundball to the first basemen, a run scored, the runner at first was put out at second and Martinez reached on the fielder's choice. He then moved to second on a Shocker error. Dean Wilson followed that up with a single scoring Martinez. After five and a half the Shocks led 4-2.

With two outs and two Eagles on in the top of the seventh, the Shockers went to their bullpen bringing in John Hayes. He gave up three straight singles, before getting out of the inning. This resulted in three runs scoring and the Shockers losing their lead, 5-4.

Mucha led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit. Kirk then executed the sacrifice bunt to move Mucha to second. Michael Burns then lined a single into the outfield scoring Mucha and tying the game up at five. An error by the pitcher, on a pickoff throw, moved Burns all the way to third. Kihle cashed him in with an infield single, but was then thrown out at second after trying to advance on an errant throw to end the inning. After eight complete the Shockers were back ahead 6-5.

Hayes comes back out for the ninth. He walked the first batter. The next Eagle put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second. With two outs, Whatley singled to left scoring the runner from second and tying the game once again.

Hilliard walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Bob Arens hit a ball to the second baseman and he misplayed the ball, putting runners on the corners. Chase Rader then stepped to the plate and got a base hit through the drawn in infield to give the Shockers a walk-off 7-6 victory.

The Shockers travel to No. 9 Dallas Baptist to finish off their regular season. Their first game of the three game set will be on Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 pm.
