SB: Fortner Named MVC Softball Player of the Week

WICHITA, Kan.—Junior Brittany Fortner of the Wichita State softball team was named the Missouri Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week during the week of April 6-April 12, the Valley announced on Monday. This is Fortner's second MVC Softball Player of the Week Honor of 2015, as she was previously named MVC Softball Player of the Week during the opening week of the 2015 season.

Overall, Monday's MVC Softball Player of the Week honor for Fortner is her fourth MVC Softball Player of the Week honor. As a sophomore, she was named MVC Softball Player of the Week twice (April 21, 2014 and May 5, 2014).

The Cedar Hill, Mo. native batted .750 (9-12) this past week. As Fortner hit .750, she also scored five runs, had two doubles, a homer, five RBI, 14 total bases and a 1.167 slugging percentage. Fortner also walked twice, had a .786 on-base percentage, a stolen base and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Fortner not only led the Shocker offense last week, but she currently leads the Valley or is tied in eight overall 2015 offensive categories: batting average at .443 (leads the Valley), hits at 62 (leads the Valley), runs scored with 37 (leads the Valley), RBI with 37 (tied for the Valley lead), doubles at 15 (tied for the Valley lead), has an on-base percentage of .515 (leads the Valley), leads the Valley with 1.41 hits per game, and has 100 total bases (leads the Valley).

To go along with the eight offensive overall stats Fortner leads the Valley in, she also has a triple, seven homers, a .714 slugging percentage, 22 walks, six stolen bases, and a 1.000 fielding percentage in 2015.

Fortner, who was named to the 2015 preseason All-MVC First Team, earned 2015 Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team honors at the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas.

Heading into this week's action, Fortner has a 15-game reached base streak, and is riding a nine-game hit streak.

The Shockers return to action on Wednesday when they face Missouri State in their only MVC midweek doubleheader of the season. First pitch for game one is at 3 p.m., and game two will begin at 5 p.m.
