STILLWATER, Okla. – A tough first round couldn't keep Giulia Guidetti down. The Wichita State sophomore notched two victories Sunday to win the consolation bracket at the ITA Central Region Championships.

Guidetti was the only one of eight Shockers to suffer a first-round loss in the main singles draw, but it didn't stop her from posting one of the team's most impressive performances. She bounced back with six wins over the next three days to finish on a high note.

""I'm really happy for Giulia," said WSU head coach, Colin Foster. "She has so much ability and athleticism and sometimes can be too hard on herself. This weekend she allowed herself to play her way into matches and really build points, games, sets and matches with a strong foundation."

Guidetti knocked off a pair of Drake Bulldogs on Sunday in the semifinals and finals. She took care of Adrienne Jensen, 6-0, 6-1, then finished off Maddie Johnson, 6-4, 6-0.

In main draw action, Julia Schiller (ITA No. 121) played a solid quarterfinal match against top-seed Viktoriya Lushkova (ITA No. 12) but came out on the short end of a 6-4, 7-6(4) decision.

"Julia gave it her best effort, but it just wasn't meant to be today," Foster said. "We've got two more tournaments that will both be more of a team format, which will be good preparation for our spring dual season."

The first of these hidden duals comes next weekend in Nashville, Tenn. (Oct. 23-25) at Vanderbilt's June Stewart Invitational.
