MBB: Cotton Hits Milestone, Shocks Down Dogs by 34

WICHITA, Kan. – Tekele Cotton celebrated his new title as “All-Time Winningest Shocker” with 10 points to go with 15 from Ron Baker, and No. 14 Wichita State cruised past Drake, 74-40, Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

Cotton participated in his 108th career win – one more than former teammate Demetric Williams, who amassed 107 from 2009-13.

The Shockers (18-2, 8-0 Missouri Valley Conference) struggled in Des Moines last month in their MVC opener but looked much sharper in the rematch, running their conference winning streak to 26 games with their largest margin of victory in that stretch (34 points).

A total of 15 players saw action for WSU, and 13 of them scored points. The Shockers topped 50 percent from the field in both halves on their way to 51.9 percent for the day.

Baker was 5-for-11 overall, 3-of-7 from three-point range. Fred VanVleet chipped in eight points, four steals and six assists with just one turnover.

Shaquille Morris missed WSU's trip to Drake but was a factor on both offense and defense, Sunday, scoring nine points to go with three rebounds and a block.

Drake center Jacob Enevold, who put up a double-double against the Shockers earlier this year with 15 rebounds, had more turnovers (5) than points (4) in Round No. 2.

Drake (4-16, 1-7 MVC) dropped its 12th straight road game. Reed Timmer led the way with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting.

The Shockers defeated Drake for the 100th time (their highest total against any one opponent all-time) and have won 39 of the last 43 against the Bulldogs in Wichita.

Despite going deep into its bench, WSU turned the ball over just five times (matching its season low) and committed only one giveaway in the second half. Drake finished the game with 17 turnovers.

Outrebounded in the Dec. 31 matchup between the two teams, the Shockers turned the tables with a 31-25 margin on the glass.

The Shockers wasted little time establishing a lead, hitting five of their first seven shots.

Baker hit a three and VanVleet a jumper for a 5-0 lead. Carter knocked down two in a row, the second coming on a transition lob from VanVleet. Carter fed Baker on a cut to the hoop for an easy layup, and the Shockers led 11-4 just four minutes in.

Ria'n Holland got in on the fun with a three to push the lead to double-digits, 16-6 with 11:15 to go in the half.

Cotton stepped in front of a Drake pass and converted a tricky reverse layup to make it an even dozen, 20-8 near the nine-minute mark.

Drake dug into its timeout supply in an effort to slow the momentum, using up a two 30-second timeouts in the first 14 minutes of the game.

Instead, the rested Shockers pushed the pace. Cotton and Baker drained triples on consecutive possessions. After a Drake basket, Bush Wamukota hustled hard for an offensive rebound and stick-back. VanVleet pushed the ball up second later for a driving layup and a 34-18 edge.

The Shockers led by as many as 19 in the half on a Rashard Kelly three and a Morris free throw for a 36-17 margin. They took  36-19 lead into the half.

WSU continued the enslaught in the second half with help from a variety of sources. The Shockers hit 12 of their first 18 out of the gate.

Cotton added to his highlight reel with two dunks.

An 11-0 run, spurred on by a five-point flurry from reserve Tevin Glass, grew a 22-point lead to 33 with just over eight minutes remaining.

The Shockers added another 10-0 run the final minutes, with the last six points coming on back-to-back threes from Corey Henderson and Jared Walker, giving them their biggest lead of the day at 39.

Drake scored the last five points of the game for the final margin.

NOTES:

The Shockers won the majority of their MVC games last year by comfortable margins but none by more than 29 points. Last year's home game against Drake, an 83-54 WSU win, was the biggest spread.

WSU won its seventh straight against Drake.

The Shocker wore their retro MTXE era throwbacks uniforms for the second time this year. They're 2-0 in those threads with an average margin of victory of 27.0 points.
