MIDLAND, Texas – The Wichita State men's tennis team will be well-represented on the final day of the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, thanks to a strong Saturday performance.
In men's singles, Tin Ostojic (first flight) and Miroslav Herzan (second flight) both reached the semifinals of their respective draws. The doubles team of Ostojic and Tomislav Gregurovic is also into the final four.
Morning rains delayed action for the second straight day. The first matches, originally scheduled for 8:30 a.m., were postponed by nearly six hours.
In his first two matches of the Fall 2014 season, the top-seeded Ostojic (No. 109 in the ITA Division I National Rankings) took down Texas A&M's Frankie Colunga, 8-2, then dispatched New Mexico's Bart Van Leijsen by an 8-3 count. He'll face TCU's Trey Daniel Sunday morning at 8:30 with a spot in the finals on the line.
Gregurovic narrowly missed a semifinal spot of his own. In his second round match, the WSU senior posted an impressive win over the tournament's No. 2 seed, Michael Reichman of Texas, by a lopsided 8-1 score. However, in the following round, Gregurovic dropped a tough match to Rice's Max Andrews, 8-5.
Herzan got his collegiate tennis career off to a strong start in the second flight, knocking off Texas A&M's Matt Montague, 8-3, then surviving Tulsa's Chase Gordon, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. Herzan will battle Henry Adams of Abilene Christian in the semifinals at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
In other second flight action, Jocelyn Devilliers fell in the opening round to Texas-Arlington's Sebastian Ermicioiu, 8-5.
The doubles duo of Ostojic and Gregurovic (seeded No. 2 in the draw) shined in a pair of 6-4 wins. They edged Abilene Christian's tandem of Gesser and Agritelley, then fought past Tulsa's Kirby and Bautista in the quarterfinals.
Devilliers avenged his loss in the singles draw, teaming with Herzan to hand Ermicioiu and his UTA teammate Jonathan Gonzalez a 6-3 setback. Herzan and Devilliers then pushed the top seeds from Tulsa (Reichmann and Jou) in a narrow, 6-4 defeat.
The brothers Guillermo and Sergio de Vilchez dropped a first round heart-breaker to TCU's Johnson and Wiggins, 6-5.
